Weird Question? #741313 07/30/06 03:20 AM

When I first get in and start my Trooper up the brakes are really hard. I push in the clutch and it starts rolling backwards, (major slope to driveway), as soon as it starts the brakes feel fine. Is this normal or is it a sign of something ominous.

Roll Me Over
It's normal. You don't have power brakes until the engine is running.

The hose from your master cylinder that goes over to the
intake manifold has a check valve in it and should give you
one 'power assisted' brake push after the engine is turned off.
If you aren't getting that one assist, either you have a slight leak at the brake booster or the check valve is stuck
open. Without a vacuum, you have no power assisted brakes.
That check valves holds the vacuum after the engine
is off until you hit the brakes and use it... then
it's back to non-assisted until you restart.

Hmmm , maybe I should check my valve then.I know when my truck stalled on me a couple times because of the bad plug harness on my fuel pump , I had no power assist at all , it was push the pedal down as hard as you can to stop Is that valve right inside the booster or part of the front of it where the master bolts on and can be adjusted?

HEY DAVE THAT CHK VLV FOR THE BRAKE BOOSTER IS IN THE VACC, LINE THAT RUNS FROM THE BOOSTER OVER TO THE MANIFOLD, IT IS EASY TO OVERLOOK BECAUSE IT IS A WAYS UP INSIDE THE HOSE AND IS NOT AVAILABLE SEPERATELY YOU HAVE TO BUY THE HOSE WITH IT , IF BY CHANCE YOURS IS MISSING YOU CAN USE JUST ABOUT ANY VACC CHK VLV AS LONG IT WILL FIT IN THE HOSE . Thats my problem Jerry , I replaced that hose with braided stainless like my fuel lines I guess I'll pick up a valve that fits in there and get it working again.

When I went through and replaced old rubber in mine I replaced the hose with another with no check valve, it doesn't present a real problem....

You can find replacement inline check valves in the 'Help' section of your local auto parts store... heck, if you ask a good counter guy, he'll be able to point a few out. The Isuzu stock piece actually inserts insider the hose, but you can easily use one that cuts and inserts with a barb on either end. Simple!
