Decided to pull my 2500lb tent trailer up to Donner Lake for a week of camping. Unfortunately, I ended up travelling on one of the hottest days of the year(Sat July 22). I was travelling from the East Bay, up I80 through Sacremento and up to Donner Lake. When I hit Rocklin the outside air temp gauge read 113F. When I got to Donner the temp was still 92F.

In the end the Truck pulled like a champ. The coolant temperature gauge never budged. Not even a little bit. Oil pressure stayed nice and high (55-60psi). I really worked the engine to keep the truck up to speed. Was doing some 5000rpm pulls at 60mph. Saw quite a few vehicles pulled over (broken down).

I have owned the truck since nearly new, and have performed normal maint. (although I am not a maint freak). I drain and top up the coolant every other year. With the way that this truck (and my '90) have behaved (coolant temp wise) I dont understand the references to overheating and Auto Trans temperature problems. I use Mobil 1 (Dex III) in the tranny. Maybe that helps.

Just wanted to share.

Donner lake is beutiful. My LS handles both 80 and 50 to Tahoe real well. Exactly what you said is what is true with mine as well.

since you probably did the change to mobil 1 early on in the life of the trans, it probably didn't mess with anything. BUT if you ask brendan (87montero) he will tell you, don't use anything other than Diamond ATF from mitsu. Mobil 1 in a used worn trans will eat seals, and cause problems...
