86 4 runner stock IFS. If i make a hard turn, either way, i get this horrible, deep, squeek, sorta grind groan type of noise from the front. It's not just a turn, it has to have enough inirtia to flex the suspension too. If I'm doin a U turn over a curb it definately does it then. I though it might be the torsion bar spring? (the long bar going from the suspension arm to the anchor arm) but it doesnt seem like it's coming from those areas, i think. The suspension doesn't make any other indicating noises. The cv's dont tick or anything.
Anyone experience anything like this?

There are 'stops' on the knuckles that have plastic caps on them to avoid metal to metal contact. Yours are likely gone or worn through. Get new ones or gob some grease on them to get rid of the noise. Easy fix.

Very common. The physical steering stops are just metal bolts with plastic caps on them. The caps last all of about 30 miles before they crack and come off, leaving you with the metal-on-metal horrible groan they all have under those circumstances.

Oh my, I just might be learning!!!!! I was ready to tear the whole frront end apart and grease those springs. Instead, I thought i'd ask the collective conscience (of toys). I'm the guy who spent 6 weeks or so diagnosing the ecu and all electrical points, fuel filter, pump, 3tps's, plug wires and more before realizing that my cutting out was the cap n rotor.
Cool, so a dab o grease and no more scaring the pedestrians and passersby when I turn. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Pretty cool huh? Didn't even need tools. Now, eventually the grease will go away. Just keep greasing, or replace that plastic cap to shut it up for a longer amount of time.

For future reference for other IFS owners...
The most likely cause of a squeak/creak/groan in front is steering stops that need greased. This only happens when you PULL against the steering stop in a hard turn. If you let the wheel return a little and the noise vanishes, it's probably the steering stops.
(This is one reason, by the way, that you SHOULDN'T hold the wheel against the stop in a turn on any vehicle. Back off half an inch and you'll turn 99.99% as sharp, but without your P/S system bypassing fluid, and wearing the steering stops).
If the squeak happens in turns and greasing the stops doesn't help, the next most likely cause is a bad idler arm. The bushings supporting the arm go out, and it squeaks over bumps/while turning. It's a metal pivoting arm mounted on the frame behind the Rt. front tire and connected to the steering linkage.

If you grease the stops at each oil change, you should keep the Toyota creak subsided. Jeff
