Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just picked up a 89 runner. prev owner pulled the head and had all the intake components taken apart and no marks on any hoses or wires. Have everything reassembled and i think i got everything in the right spot, however it starts and then dies immediately. also there are two connectors left over and i cant figure out what there for (small dark grey, w/2-wires and a light gray w/2-wires that is similar in appearance to the injector leads ) maybe for cruise option? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,

I just finished an overhaul on my 95 3.0 4x4 during which I replaced the entire engine harness. If the connectors you are talking about are on the driver side of the engine they sound like the knock sensor. The knock sensor is located in the top of the engine block toward the aft end under the intake manifold. Its wire comes out from under the manifold along the head in the area of the middle injector. There is a small groove for this wire to fit through. If this is the area of your concern then you can probably connect the two extra connectors together.

As for starting and dying right away. You have to have your intake ducting from the Mass Airflow (MAF)valve installed and the MAF electrical connector plugged to the connector on the top of it. You need all the air going into the engine to pass through the MAF so it can properly measure it and know how much fuel to inject. If there is a big enough vacuum leak in intake manifold via hoses gasket gaps, etc this can cause the same thing to happen because air is getting into the engine without going through the MAF first. I would assemble the entire air intake from air filter to engine including the hose to the box that is down by the exhaust. The one that gets in the way when you try to change spark plugs.

Good luck
