I seem to be having problems getting the correct 02 sensor for my 2000 Tacoma. The two I already bought have a different end connector so neither one was a direct plug in. I had to cut the new connector off and solder my old one on. I'm thinking my truck might be california emmisions, how can I find this out for sure? I live in New England so I didn't think of it at first.

Look under the hood, the sticker near one of the front corners should say either CA or Fed, next to the emission stuff. However a CA emmisions or not, the O2 sensor should be the same. Getting ones that don't fit is the problem when buying non-oem ones. I know the oem ones tend to cost more, but you can find online Toyota dealers that tend to be 25% lower than local dealers.

Thanks. The reason I thought the california emission sensor was the one I needed is because even when I put on one of the universal sensors, the truck would buck badly and suck up some serious fuel. This is the second time I ended up putting my old sensor back on the truck. The only wires I could have screwed up are the ground wires and I know that wouldn't do it.

I ordered my 02 sensor from 1st toyota parts. They are a toyota dealer with online ordering. I called them up, they asked for my VIN, typed it in the computer and made sure I got the right sensor.

Thanks guys, after doing a little homework, it looks like california emissions uses two different part number o2 sensors. Federal uses the same sensor before and after cat.

If yours is a Cali emmisioned rig, that would explain why you are having to re-use the old connection. When you do cut and solder, make sure to keep the new O2 senors wires the same lentgh as the old ones, a longer/shorter distance the signal has to go can/will cause the ecu to get different readings from what it expects, due to the difference in signal strentgh.

I definately didn't know that . All's I did was cut, solder and called it good. I think I was pretty gosh darn close though. They're definately California emmisions. Hard to find these trucks around here, the dealer had two on his lot so I bought 'em both....the wife ended up with the better truck somehoe Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

A buddy of mine went through two cut and solder O2 sensors on for his '88 efi runner. He took back the first one thinking it was bad. After the second one was still triggering a code, he asked one of the techs at his store about the problem. The tech told him to make sure the wires are the same length, which he new the weren't. After work he shortend the wires and the sensor worked perfectly.
