Anyone durabacked the whole exterior? #743464 08/09/06 02:47 AM

I have seen where the guys in peterson's have done it on a few trucks but I think it would be a great idea for my old 83 pickup. Has anyone ever coated the whole exterior with a "smooth" duraback and so DO YOU HAVE PICS.

I didn't do the whole truck, but only the bottom half. It was cheap (under 20$) and didn't take too long.

Here's the pics [Linked Image]

I think the whole truck would be a bit overkill, add a lot of weight to your truck, and be kind of pricey, unless you went with black. I looked into colored duraback for my flatbed and it was $120+/gallon. Using black would be cheaper, but black would make your rig hot as hell, I parked next to a Cherokee that was done in line-x and it radiated more heat than my black truck does. The other problem with using black is that would fade faster than the colored stuff, so while it would look good when it was finished, in 6months it would be a faded grey color. If you are looking for new color/protection, I would repaint the top part of the truck and do the lower 1/3 in durabak. There is a post here a couple of weeks ago with a link to where a guy used a roll on acrylic/enamel paint by Tremclad(Rustoleum here in the states). The car in the pics looked incredible, and according to the author, the paint is really durable and tough.

And in a year and a half, it'll be faded to a light gray and flaking off. Don't waste your time. I've got more experience with crappy roll-on liners than anyone should ever have.

('None' is the correct amount of experience with DIY liners, BTW. They look great until you drop a wrench or brick on 'em after they're 6 months old and faded like crazy).

i was looking into doing this myself but then decided not to b/c of it being hard to clean. i know you can pressure wash it but that seems like kind of a hassle when you dont have your own driveway.

edit***i think that bronco 2 might be durabak too. im not sure b/c i saved those pics on my comp a long time ago.

My sliders and rear bumper faded in under six months. The herculiner on the sliders wears off were my shoes scuff it getting and out of the truck, and the rear bumper peeled off w/in a year.

If you are going to pay for the durabak, you should consider line-x it, it will cost about the same, and the line-x will last virtually forever. You can now paint over the line-x to match your truck, so you aren't stuck with black, or the few dies they used to have available. I still wouldn't waste the money doing the whole truck, just the lower half. which is the most prone to trail damage.

Well, personally, I was quoted nearly $300 to do the rockers all the way around with line-x. Line-x looks to be a great product but too $$$ for my blood.
As I mentioned, I used two cans of Duplicolor, one per side. I do expect it to fade and I expect to touch it up about once a year. At $20 a year, I've got about 15 years before I catch up to one line-x payment.
