I am coming up on my 80K mark on my 4Runner and need to do the timing belt (and probably the supercharger belt at the same time)

I was curious how much approx I can expect to pay either the dealer or a mechanic to do the replacement (assuming they will do the water pump at the same time?)

I just don't think I'm adventurous enough to attempt it myself. Also, I would consider having the dealer do it because of the S/C and them knowing the proper tension that should be set to (unless you think a mechanic could set it properly. What should it be at and how does one check that anyhow)

Thanks!!

Price? Call around and ask. Most shop rates are $80/hr anymore.

Maybe Jeff will chime in here on the SC. Most of us prefer to toss money at gears, but I see you got the truck that way.

I guess you don't have the automatic tensioner for your S/C... don't assume that the stealer will get the tension right for the S/C. Most of the techs will set it by hand to "tight enough" - this either will be too much and put too much load on the nose bearings, or not enough tension which will slip and ruin a belt pretty quick (while you're at it, you may want to make sure you always have a spare belt anyway).

Most dealers have specials running for the timing belt. It should be about $250 or so. I did mine at 195k and it was easy, all except the timing tensioner. It is supposed to take a special tool to compress and it took alot of "creativity" to figure out how to do it w/ my own tools. The new belt is very tight to put on even with the tensioner fully compressed.

There's a tech writeup of a belt change here.

Concerning the S/C belt... exactly what Wyatt said. There's a belt tension testing tool that costs a few hundred dollars. It's very doubtful that many dealerships even have that. They just make it "tight enough". You should order the TRD dynamic belt tensioner and have them install it at the same time. I had the S/C belt tensioner installed about a year ago and love it. It greatly simplifies changing the belt yourself too.

Thanks for the info guys. Do you have the part number for the tensioner? Aprox how much does it run and are there any good sites that you use for parts such as these and the belts?

I think my truck has about 75k at the moment. The link that Wyatt put for changing suggested around 90k. Just wondering if I should put it off till next summer.

Thanks a ton...time for me to come back and start reading the forum again. I forgot how much help everyone is

OK...here's what I found in my documentation
[Blows dust off]
For the TRD Exhaust - "New gaskets are available through your Toyota dealer under part number 90917-06072"
For the TRD Tensioner - "Dynamic Tension for 3.4L Supercharged Vehicles part number 00602-17620-090"

As far as the mileage, 75k may be a little early. I just changed mine and it had 195K on it (OK...I may have waited a little too long )

Thanks a bunch Wyatt! Will check the net and my local stealer for the parts. Crap, one I forgot to ask you was the part number for the S/C belt itself.

Holy...195K! Mine is a 99 with abt 76k on it currently. I might just put it off till next summer. If it 'were' to suddenly snap, is the 3.4 non-interference where I would be stranded somewhere but without any damage to the engine?

Thanks again!
