I would like to try sea foam in my engine; I get the part of putting it in the crankcase via the oil fill cap. I also think I understand the proceedure of pouring slowly into the brake boost line but I just don't know where it is... so could someone kindly point it out for me?



Here is the reason for the Sea Foam... '00 Trooper 3.5L with 109k; replaced engine at 66k. I noticed right after refueling this past weekend that the vehicle would have a slipping sensation when starting from a dead stop and then another "shutter" around 30-35 mph when applying light pressure to the accelerator to maintain speed. Much more noticable with the trailer in tow (4,000 lbs). I figure transmission, take it in and the shop says nope it's the motor; tranny is tip top. No lights on the instrumentation panel and no codes in the computer. So I figure bad gas, I'll treat it with some Sea Foam and see what happens. What do you folks think?

One more question about Sea Foam... will using it cause the check engine light to come on? And if it does will it go off once you have burned / drained it all out?

I can't tottaly see (therefore I don't know for sure) but this one (I marked it in yellow) looks like it's probably the brake booster line. It should go from the manifold to the brake booster (should only be one line going that route).




Seafoam shouldn't cause the check engine light to come on. If you add it directly to the oil, change the oil shortly thereafter.

Have you ever lube the slip yolk? Thre is a zerk on it (the only zerk on the whole truck).

Nope, never have lubed the slip yoke. I'll have a look see if I can find it and give it some grease. You're thinking that might cause the "slipping / shutter" sensation? Won't hurt to give it some grease and see what happens.

Edit: I went out to check the Slip Yoke and found something interesting see this thread for more info on this lead. I will post here with the final outcome and any additional information on the Sea Foam route.

You can also get some Deep Creep (same stuff in a spray can) and spray it into one of the smaller hoses which are connected to the main air intake tube, or find a vacuum line which sees manifold vacuum and spray in there.

I don't see why Seafoam/Deep Creep would cause any Check Engine lites.

I've used it a few times and haven't had any CELs. Clouds and clouds of white smoke but no CELs.

Like Ed said, a vacuum line closer to the throttle body might help break up sludge in the upper intake manifold a bit better since its more "upstream". The trick with the seafoam is to take the vac line off while the motor is running and plug it with your thumb. Hold the cup of seafoam in your other hand. Use a big cup so you can put your hand in it. Put the tube down to the surface of the seafoam unplug the tube and let some of it suck in. Repeat this by letting it drink a little at a time. the motor bogs or stalls if you let the vacuum line open to suck air for a short period and may cause a maf-related cel (never has for me but I imagine if you let it go for a while like that it might), so keep it plugged and alternate letting it "drink".

I used the Sea Foam through the brake booster line and it went good. I don't yet know if it solved my "slipping & shuddering" problem. So far so good. Still no CEL either.

Now if I can just figure out what to do on that slip yoke .

JARED WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT ON THE DRIVE SHAFT IS NOT A BUSHING IT IS ACTUALLY A GREASE BOOT , WHAT YOU NEED IS PT NO 897020 5971 IT SHOULD BE ABOUT 30.00 AT A DLR , ALL IT DOES IS HELP KEEP THE GREASE IN THE SLIP YOKE JERRY

Ok sounds good Jerry, so in order to change that out and clean everything up... what I would do is disconnect the drive shaft at the U-Bolt on the slip yoke side, and everything will come apart from there? Clean out the old grease and reassemble and repack with grease and I'm good to go?
