I'm getting ready to build up /rebuild the c223 in my 86 trooper.I would like to re-bearing the crank, replace the oil pump, crank seals,Re-build the fuel pump and increase the fuel delivery to 120-130HP advance the timing,Intercool it and increase the cold side displacement of the turbo.,Yes I will be running pyro& boost gauges.
Can anyone help me w/ some experience on this C223T motor?
I can't believe such a great manufacture/Isuzu,would build a motor that couldn't handle a well managed boost in performance.
This rig will be getting some major changes in the near future like staight axle swap, bigger rear end, rear locker.33" swamper radials,Custom bull bar/safari rack, skid plating, warn 8274 winch, custom rocker guards,& most importantly SVO hot oil conversion...
I think this old trooper will be the missing link between my big diesel Unimogs& my well equipped,go anywhere Samurais... [color:"red"]
Any good advice in this endeavor is greatly appreciated P.S.,this will take some time,I've got to finish x2unimog build ups,x2 Suzuki builds, converting my Frieghtliner to veg. oil,&finalize my Rokon Honda 110cc project, and figure out how to pay all my bills

Wow it does sound like you have a few years worth of projects ahead of you.
As for the C223T engine I have heard the rods are the weak link when increasing horse power. According to my service manual the stock C223t is already 128 hp. Look at what acy76 is doing to his Trooper. He went with the 2.8 liter four banger turbo diesel. Sweet. I may be rebuilding my C223T although I have never done a diesel engine before. I have visions of the cover of John Muir's "How to rebuild your VW, for the complete idiot." in my head. Yeah, this kind of dates me to nuttin' on cars since 1970. In the cartoon a hippie looking shade tree mechanic is trying to sleep while remembering where fifty million parts and bolts go together.
Anyway good luck and keep us posted.

I checked again to be sure. According to Chilton the 1986 C223 diesel has 93@2200 (ft.lbs.@RPM) The C223T (turbo) has 128@2200 and here is where I messed up. These engines are rated in horsepower C223 58@4300 HP@RPM & C223T 80@4300.
Sorry about that. Yeah, 80 horse power for the turbo and 58 HP for the normally aspirated engines. Not much poop.

Thanks,this is good news.
I had a friend who was researching this motor for one of our little Unimogs,& he thought in the last years of this engine in the pick-ups,it was offered @ 122 HP,so I think if this # is attainable It will be enough power for the task @ hand.,But I'd sure like to verify this 122 HP. in the truck version though...

Body Damage is Cool
NO WAY THAT 2.2 WOULD STAY TOGETHER LONG MAKING THAT KIND OF HP, THE 3.9 NPR ENG IS ONLY GOOD FOR ABOUT 120 WITH THE INTERCOOLED TURBO , IN THOSE YEARS , JERRY

5 years ago everyone said my 97 dodge Cummins w/a stock 185 hp & almost 200,000 miles couldn't be almost doubled to 350 HP,worked hard & hold together, but it's been doing it for the last four years...
I think a modest 28-32%increase well managed seams do able, I could be wrong though$$$$ we will see

jcouchster, what Jerry is saying is basically the truth with the C223-T. Not that it's a bad diesel engine, but they had a connecting rod weakness that plagued them after the 200,000 mile mark. If you were to rebuild one today with the most upgraded parts (importantly the con rods), I'm sure it would be better than factory for strength. But as fas as modding one for 115-125 HP, I don't think you could get one to that range without having it be reliable at the same time. The good news is that I think you could see 90-100 HP with a few little mods. Like after upgrading to a little bit bigger turbocharger, better air flow for the intake to the turbo, intercooling the engine, and of course going with a bigger, more free-flowing exhaust. After those mods I could see you easily pushing 90 HP and you really might see the number around 100. Given that gain you're looking at a 20% increase in power with a rating of 100 HP. 80 HP is stock. I know if I had a factory C223-T engine and wanted to upgrade it chances are I'd be satisfied with 90 pretty quick. I'm used to driving low horsepower diesel vehicles all the time and I've never complained. The reliability is what counts the most on these awesome powerplants. It would be cool to see what you could come up with though if you do plan on rebuilding and then modifying. Good luck!

Thanx,120 HP would have been nice, but I guess 100 will have to do.
I really don't travel light enough ,thats why I'm looking for the higher HP#.My last motorcycle trip through the dune fields of the Altar Desert of Mexico on my Kawasaki KLR I weighed over 520 pounds, thats over 160 #s of gear & fuel in 500+ foot high sand dunes!,so w/ the spacious capacity of the Troopy,it'll be tough to think light..
