Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've got a '91 22RE truck w/ 190K+ miles on it... does anyone know what the typical life of the in-tank fuel pump on these trucks is? Has anyone had a fuel pump "die of old age"? I just don't want to get stranded way far out...
Thanks, -Keith B.-

I thnk the one in my '85 is original, nearly 280K miles and pressure is still good. I do carry a spare in my parts box just in case. I thnk they last a long time as long as you don't run them dry too many times. That is probably the biggest killer, the pump uses the gas as a coolant and lubricant.

It's a VERY good question and one that I've asked here a few times. Seems that they do typically last well into the 200K range.

I, like you, don't want to end stranded somewhere and even with a spare...which I do carry...it would be one heck of a PITA to change in the back country.

The only reason I haven't put a new one is that they're pretty spendy at Toyota...and I hate to go to all that work to replace it only to have to made some minor mistake or whatever to cause the new pump to fail or if I got a bad new pump.

I have well over 210K miles on my truck and I think I will eventually just replace the pump, but not right now. Maybe for next summer.

But as long as we're on the subject, I too, would like to hear more stories from others about how long they typically last and what were the signs of impending failure?

Piece of cake to change in a 1st gen 4Runner, access hatch under the rear seat bottom, right over the fuel pump. I just carry a used pump for a spare.

Anyone know what volume the stock pump is rated for? IE - I want to know how much HP the pump will support.

Not sure, but I think Mosk is pushing 200HP+ with the stock fuel pump.

Fuel pump longevity û I thought it was around 280k for my 85 4runner. But this turned out to be not true. I broke down coming out of Saline Valley Rd (South Way). I got my brother to tow me home to San Diego. I narrowed the problem down to no fuel - via the access hatch under the rear seat û loosen the fuel line and no fuel. Went to the dealer pick up a fuel pump. I went to replace the fuel pump and the pipe was separate at the top of the access point (inside the gas tank). Returned the fuel pump and bought a new access point /fuel pump holder. Keep in mind that there is a long one and a short one. I learned this the hard way as well. So, to make a long story short I donÆt knowà
