is there a particularly good or bad source for upper and lower ball joint replacements for an '89 trooper? are o'reilly/auto zone type parts suitable? they should be seeing plenty of trail time.

thanks

I'd go with the O'reilly ... they're Moog.

thanks for the response. no one had them in stock but o'reilly will have the moog, lifetime warranty, uppers ($35.99 ea.) and lowers ($61.48 ea.) for me to pick up in the morning.

I just ordered a pair of lowers from Importec for $60 & free shipping. they carry some aftermarket brands not found in chain stores, mostly stuff from Japan but I got a set of $15 bj's for one of my cars and they were German brand and appeared high quality - way better than the OE stuff I replaced.

fwiw I installed a set of Moog uppers on my Troop and they are solid parts.

How can you tell when lower ball joints need replacing? Are there any sounds or noticeable characteristics?

Body Damage is Cool
If the boot gets torn to shreds water can wash away the grease and sand and dirt get in the joint, this is usually a good clue. Often times it feels like a little pothole is a huge hole. I replaced both my lowers when I got my truck a few years ago and they looked like a mortar and pestle like for making magic potions

Don't wait until this point to replace them it can be very dangerous.

Pete: Before you buy, check w/ Ara Bulunmaz ara.bulunmaz@bellnet.ca or matt @ www.independent4x.com

John: Bad lower BJs would have a lot of play in them. BTW, the lower BJs are much more expensive for 95-02 troopers. Matt can get them for a decent price.
