I have to get my 86 4runner smogged. I'm afraid it won't pass because the exhaust is stinky. The inspection guy told me a bad cat WON'T cause the rotten egg smell. No codes,CEL or anything like that.Any thoughts?

might just be a tank of gas with a lot of sulphur in it. Try a different gas station. Tjis is not terribly rare.

I agree, the rotten-egg smell comes from the sulfur in the gas. It is possible that you might have gotten a bad batch. Has it been stinky for a couple of tanks now? You don't have a small leak before the cat do you?

No doubt about it. Everytime I smell that stink on I-5, I will come up on a vehicle with Tijuana plates. Bad gas my friend. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />
