I just got around to change my crank bolt and I can't get it torqued to 112pounds like the book says. I tried stopping the steering pump pulley with a wrench but the belt slides around it when I start torqing it. I was going to pull the starter and stick a breaker bar against the flexplate but I am afraid of cracking it. Any ideas?

A 3.0L crankshaft pulley should be torqued to 134 lb-ft, +/- 3 lb-ft. I'll let others describe various methods for holding the pulley stationary.

How did you hold it still to get it out? Cant you reverse that? Heck I purchased my bolt and was never able to get the old one out. So I just keep checking it to make sure it is tight and will change it when timing belt time comes along in apx 20000 more miles.

mine came out by jerking it with a breaker bar and it came right off.

Doesn't the 3.0L engine have the two holes on the crank pulley like the 3.5L? I made a tool that inserted in those holes to hold the pulley still. May be I'm just showing my lack of knowledge about the 3.0L here...

Yes they are supposed to. Matter of fact I got one of the tools on loan from DougB to hold mine still. But my pulley was slightly different then most people on this forum have so it did not work.

Wait a minute I just thought of something. Maybe my pulley looks more like yours. Do you have any pics? Maybe mine has been switched out with a newer one by the previous owner.

Wrap the belt up on it, and put the belt over another one of the pullys. Ought to tighten up on it good enough to get your appropriate torque.

I use an old serp. belt wrapped around it and wrap the other end to something stationary, just like Landraider said. Works every time.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.
