Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just spoke to Toyota parts and to convert back to stock body height the body bushings cost $50 each x 6 = $300 !

This is basically a DD and I don't want to spend that much, does anyone have a cheaper route to get the cab back down? Seems the bed would be ok with just some rubber strips as bushings, but I would like a little cushion for the cab.

Any suggestions.....Thanks

A few years ago I converted a 3" body lift down to 2". It was a Performnance Accessories lift that used molded plastic lift blocks. I just cut 1" off each block. I bet you could do the same thing with yours, except go shorter... if the lift blocks are aluminum, it might be a bit of a pain though.

Whoa... You're going about this the wrong way, I think.

1 - buy an Energy suspension body mount kit.
2 - buy appropriate bolts for mounting body to frame (3" shorter than you have now, or check w/ toyota for the exact bolt spects)
3 - remove blocks and bushings
4 - install energy suspension components
5 - move radiator
6 - fix steering column
7 - check odds and ends
8 - enjoy.

Shouldn't cost more than $100 for teh bushings and bolts.

Your stock body mounts should still be there, BL only put a spacer between the oem frame mount and the oem body mounts. You should be able to reuse the old body mounts, however since your truck is 21 yrs old it is time for new ones anyways. Summit Racing has them priced fas low as $40/kit. You will reuse all of the oem washers, you will need new grade 8 bolts and nuts, figure about another $18 for the cab, and about $10 for the bed. The bed mounts directly to the frame with only a 1/8" piece of rubber between the bed and frame mount. You should be able to remove the 3" spacers from the bumpers, the radiator, the steering shaft, and the gas tank filler neck. The brake and gas lines should be o.k., though you may have to fold them back a little. You should be able to recoup most/some of your money by reselling the body lift kit.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

At a minimum, all you need is stock length hardware:

All you are doing is removing the lift blocks, as noted above. It is probably a good idea to replace the body mount bushings if the old ones are in bad shape, but otherwise they can be re-used:

The guy I talked to at Toyota mentioned energy suspensions, but I was a little skeptical about using urathane as a body bushing, due to harshness and squeeks. Are any of you guys using this set? A buddy of mine I was talking to tonite mentioned just going to a auto parts store and getting some generic urathane sway bar bushings and using those as a cushion. BTW - the stock bushings are definately 21 years old, they're toast.
I'll give energy suspensions a call tomorrow to check on prices, and then check the autoparts store to see if they have anything that will come close to the dimensions I need, just for kicks...and go from there.

Also, I just gotta say thanks guys, great forum you've got going here....which I didn't expect any less from Toyota guys I guess, cool gremlins too

I love my poly body mount bushings. Compared to the shredded and missing stock bushings, no comparison. If your stock rubber bushings are in good shape, keep them. How to tell if they are in good shape? Look at them, 10 sets in all, top and bottom bushing half. If they are deeply cracked and hardened or deteriorated and mushy (able to squeeze them with your fingers), then they are due for replacement.

On my '85, 2 of the 10 bushings were nearly shredded due to PO installing a bumper wrong, and one bushing was gone, no trace of it, again I suspect the PO was to blame. Likely the mounting bolt had the nut come loose and fall off. leading to a rattling noise from the loose bolt. PO, in a moment of insight, finds loose bolt and concludes that this is the cause of the rattle and pulls it out, problem fixed as far as he is concerned! The remaining 7 bushings were deeply cracked on the outside and the remaining rubber was about the consistency of silly putty.

I went to a local parts store at lunch today and they can get me the full suspension kit from energy for ~$150. This is the route I'm going. Start with the body mounts and work my way down and back till i get everything replaced.
Should be a lot of fun but definately worth it in the end. Some buddy's and I have a press together so I think we can handle it and learn about Toyotas while doing so.

Thanks for all the replies to you all.
