94 4RUNNER 3.0 HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE WEEDS WHILE OWNER WAS OVERSEAS FOR 1-1/2 YEARS. HIS WIFE FORGOT TO START IT ONCE IN AWHILE. I BOUGHT IT A COUPLE WEEKS AGO. AFTER IT SITS LIKE OVER NITE IT PUFFS SMOKE FOR A FEW SECONDS ON STARTUP & THEN CLEARS UP. THAT DIDN'T BOTHER ME TOO MUCH, BUT NOW IT USING ABOUT A QUART OF OIL EVERY 150 MILES. COULD THIS BE FROM JUST SITTING? THERES ONLY 77,000 ON THIS UNIT. I DID SEE A LOT OF SLUDGE ON THE INSIDE OF THE OIL FILLER CAP. SHOULD I TRY FLUSHING THE ENGINE WITH SOME KIND OF CLEANER? OR TRY SOME ADDITIVE?

THAT'S TYPICAL OF BAD VALVE GUIDE SEALS, THEY HARDEN OVER TIME AND OIL LEAKS DOWN PAST THEM INTO THE CYLINDERS. WHEN YOU START UP IN THE MORNING IT BURNS OFF. tHIS OCCURS WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING TOO, BUT THERE'S NO ACCUMULATION SO YOU DON'T NOTICE ANY SMOKE.

And next time turn your caps OFF, it implies you are screaming, and most people get annoyed and won't reply to your post.

Didn't know I was screaming.Sorry about that. I'm kinda new at this. So do I need to bring it to a shop for repairs? I've heard of additives that swell up the seals & make them pliable again. Has anyone had any luck with such a thing?

Need a Spot
You might try using one of the oils for higher mileage engines and see if that helps.

I used it in an older car and it stopped leaking oil after a few thousand miles.
