4D56 crank in a 4D55 block? #748329 08/29/06 05:09 PM

Just trying to satisfy my miscellaneous rambling here but was wondering if you could fit a 4D56 crank in a 4D55 block. I know both have the same bore and the only difference is the stroke. 4D55s are rare here but can be found and it would be cheaper to ship a new crank & rods from OZ than a whole engine.

Still scheming on dropping a 4D55 into my Gen II or possibly a Jeep Cherokee ( Sorry, I mentioned the Brand that must not be named!) but would like the torque level to be close to what I have/had with the 3.0 V6.

Lee,

If you're going to do a diesel swap on a Cherokee I would look at a Cummins 4BT or a GM6.5TD. Lots of spares and you'll probably find adapters for your existing drivetrain.

You'll be totally on your own fitting things together with a 4D55T and will be very underpowered when you're done.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck either way!

Powell,

the 6.5 is a tight fit, and the subframe doesn't like the torque. The D35 can't take the torque either. The 4D55 is slightly larger then the 2.2 gas 4 popper from the 80's. The torque numbers are better and the T5 with BW1350 bolts right up.

always working

Powell,

I'm thinking an XJ Cherokee and not a FSJ Cherokee. Here's my reasoning - 1) The Cherokee is similar in size/weight as the Ranger, (as opposed to my Gen II, which outweighs an XJ Cherokee by about 1000 lbs.) so performance should be similar. 2) The Mitsu AW372L/KM148 has been physically bolted up to an NP231 Tcase without an adapter. 3) Already SFA. 4) The D30/D35 axles should survive OK behind the power levels expected from a 4D55. 5) Aerodynamics of the XJ are equivalent of a brick vs the side of a barn. 6) LOTS of spare & afermarket parts are availabe. Besides, there is a history of some cross breeding between Mitsubishi and Jeep!

A swap into my Gen II might be more straight forward, but I would like to see if I could drop the 4D56 crank into an available 4D55 (cheaper to ship from OZ), plus intercooling, to maybe boost the torque up to what I had with the 3.0.

Could someone with the foreign version of CAPS see if the 4D55 & 4D56 used the same block?
