Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
What is the easiest way to tell if your ECM has gone bad? And were can you find one? The jeep in question is an 85 cj7 with the carter bbd carb.

I would like to but according to colorado state emission laws the original emissions controls need to be intact for it to be licensed

You test it by the process of elimination. Have you verified that the coil and the wire/cap/rotor are good?

Sunder,
verified that all is working including the stepper motor and the ECM. But when I check the O2 sensor voltage it is reading rich. The carb. will not lean itself out as it should. The voltage I am getting is almost a volt .945. It is my understanding if all is working well it should read less than a half volt. The vehicle but all other standards is running great.

So when the key turns on the stepper motor goes all the way one way then the other then stops somewhere in the middle?

Sunder,
When the vehicle is running the stepper motor is or pin is moving back and forth contantly trying to make corrections to the rich problem. I have checked all the other important stuff temperture switch and what not through the diagnostic port next to the battery. It indicates all is working well. I have also moved the metering rods both to full rich and full lean no difference. Could the carb just need rebuilt.

Greg I would think the stepper motor would be PEGGED in the lean position if the computer was telling it the mixture was too lean. Big Jim <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

BigJim,
I would think so as well but it is not it is hunting around for the optimal sitution but cannot find it so it runs rich. Would rebuild the carb help this sitution.
