I am having trouble getting the intake manifold off of my 1986 4runner 22rec engine. I pulled 7 bolts and 2 nuts, and it won't budge. Am I missing something? There is an allen bolt sort of below and near where the thermostat housing is, and I can't seem to get to it to get it off. Is that what is holding the manifold on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, it came right off. Anyone else working on this, I recommend a ratchet mount 6mm allen wrench w/ about a 10" extension in order to be able to get to the bolt. Without that it is pretty tough to reach.

Mine was hopelessly stripped out. I ended up removing the fuel rail & using vise grips on it. I didn't waste time trying to find an aftermarket replacement, I just paid the dealer a few bucks for a new one.

yep if someones been there before ya, chances are good its wallowed out. also, the bolt is exposed to coolant I think, and it gets rusty and grungy.

I have been very curious about this bolt ever since I had to take it out myself, and every time I read somebody else w/ the same problem.
Any ideas on why in the world this thing is designed like this, w/ the allen bolt sunk in there? Why not just a regular hole and 12-14mm bolt like everything else? It's not like Toyota to do stuff randomly by any means, just looking for ideas on what the logic could be.

The allen head bolt is used so the manifold can be removed with the fuel rail & injectors attached. It would be impossible to do that with a standard bolt. & yes, stock is 6mm allen, I just bought one from the dealer. Dave
