Now that you mention it, my 86 CJ's 258 had no gasket. If the manifold has a flare cast as part of it, it probably doesn't use a gasket. A manifold that uses a "doughnut" seal will have a lip that the seal fits around. If you find you need one, a muffler shop is a possible source. I suggest a non franchised one for friendly results.

Based on everything I've read and seen I'm leaning towards that....Sure think it would get a better seal with some kinda gasket..but who am I to question the wisdom of the big wigs at Chysler...Thanks JP

I should have said the manifold for my CJ has a rounded lip cast at the connection point where the flare on the pipe fits, no gasket required. I just looked at it and verified it, I replaced it with a 4.0 manifold which does use a doughnut, and have the old manifold in the garage. I guess you have not had it apart? Do you have nuts on studs or bolts in the manifold? Can you move the pipe at the manifold? Maybe you just need to tighten it.

Sounds great at the tailpipe(mine engine is a 2.5l) it sounded like that before I replaced the exhaust man and exhaust system was just trying to figure out why it sounds like this

You should be able to tell if it's leaking or not by close inspection (looking and feeling). with new parts it shouldn't be hard to prevent or fix a leak. My buddies 85 CJ 2.5 sounds like a diesel also. He does have a cracked manifold but the diesel like noise is mostly because it's old and tired. Wear and tear on the entire valve train can cause it. A rattling/light knocking sound you can ignore or you can consider a partial or complete overhaul. I don't know if that has anything to do with your problem though.

JP sounds like my jeep,, she's prolly just worn out...She does run a whole lot better since replacing the exhaust system...I was just concerned that there wasn't a seal for the E/m to exhaust pipe but sounds like this didn't have one(i know there wasn't one when I pulled the old one out) THank again guys
