Has anyone seen the diesel conversions that some folks are doing in discos?

2.8 HS from International Harvester (or Ford.. or Land Rover....)

I don't think too many engines could touch that, and it looks so much like a c223 in layout and size ....

Impressive specs, to be sure. I think the VATN turbo has a lot to do with it - wish they were more easily obtained.

There is an outfit in Canada that is selling these engines as a repower unit, I think they've got Advance Adapters building kits so GM or other transmissions can be used.

I will look for the link when I get home.

Yeah, it certainly looks like it would fit pretty well, the oilpan does look right - a major problem with a lot of engines going in the Trooper (and other 4x4 platforms).

Here is the outfit I was talking about earlier - click on the 'services' tab to read about some of the transmission adapter options that exist for this engine. It really sounds like a great engine and it's available in North America pretty easily by the sound of that site, although I would hazard that it's not nearly as cheap as the 4JB1-T(C) for our Isuzus.

I may look into the VATN turbo technology in the future - if it can be easily used with mechanical engine controls, there might be a conversion possibility. Again, price is probably the major obstacle.

This power plant sure sounds good until you see the price,8,800 pounds!!!,which I think is somewhere around $14,000-$16,000USD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ouch!!!!!!!P.S. I think I'm going to take everyone's advice & maybe try the 2.8 Isuzu,in my 86 c223 instead of pushing the 2.2. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

Variable geometry turbos are really common on new engines right now. It won't be too long before a decent selection are available through your wrecking yard.

The older ones are controlled through either a pressure or vacuum actuator just like a wastegate. The new ones are electronically controlled which isn't as easy but shouldn't provide too many headaches if it's an analogue or PWM signal.

I have a variable vane turbo off an audi 2.5 diesel. The fitting is a little while off though.

Hopefully that will happen in the US. Currently, we have very few turbo diesel cars on the road here, also not so many turbo cars of any kind. If the large truck diesels use them, I am sure they would be too large for my 2.8 Isuzu.

I am not certain whether any models are currently sold with VATN turbos - maybe the newest VW diesels? I also think some Porsches used them, although I am not going to attempt to find one in a wrecking yard.

Couldn't you fly to brasil, buy a truck with one fitted and drive/ship it back?

The turbo I have is variable vane rather than variable nozzle. It has the ring of stator vanes around the exhaust turbine that change pitch depending on actuator position.

Care to elaborate on the differences? If I recall, Corky Bell's book was refering to what you describe as a VATN turbo. Could (definitely) be mistaken, though...

As I understand it, importing vehicles involves a fair amount of bureaucracy, especially if they were not sold here to begin with. Best bet is probably to try and find someone selling the engines (like that guy in Canada or similar).
