Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hello, new to this forum. So far it has been very helpfull, though I dont understand the search feature. When I put a subject in I get lots of stuff not related to my search. Anyway, I bought a 88 Mitsu Montaro for 600.00. It was making lots of noise when started. The guy tried tighening the timing chain but it didnt help. Looking through ther forums I deducted it was the guides. I pulled everything apart and sure enough, the balance shaft guide was broken and the chains worn. I opted to change the timing chain and put a eliminaton kit in. I have the chain on to the oil pump. Do I have to wory about timing it to the crank? Also thier is a short metal cylinder and screw that came in the elimination kit, were do they go? Anything else I should be doing while I have the timing cover off and oil pan off? Thanks, Nate

When you say "cylinder and screw", is that actually a short bolt? And did you remove the oil pump and PS balance shaft and replace the BS with a short dummy shaft in the oil pump? And did you remove the DS balance shaft and place an undrilled cam bearing in the front bore to block off the oil supply orfice in that front bore? That has to be done or you won't have any oil pressure to speak of. I don't remember timing the pump to the crank.
I might pull the rocker assembly to check for cam bearing wear (scoring in the head metal) from wandering metal from the balance shafts, a common feature of a balance shaft bearing failure.
Welcome aboard. Try using quotes in the search function.

I didnt pull the oil pump and put in a dummy shaft. That would probally be what I am calling the short bolt. The bolt is about 5 or 6 inches and squared on the end. The cylinder must be the bearing for the balance shaft. Do I take the balance shaft out, put the bearing in and then put the plate were the chain gear was back on?
When the Monty started making chain noise, it was parked. The woman who owned it put a for sale sign on it. It was driven onto and off the trailer and that was it.
Thanks for the help.

You can leave the plate and both balance shafts off. The dummy oil pump shaft looks like the nose of the PS balance shaft and the oil pump sprocket bolts on the front end. I remember minimal protrusion of the dummy into the PS BS bore.
