I would like to know how hard it is to replace a clutch on a 1988 Montero,2.6L engine 4 wheel drive,any advice and tips would be appreciated

You have to remove the transmission so it's a real pain. Shop around, I found a good deal at a shop for around $450.

As trannies go, it's a fairly light one. Five years ago a buddy of mine helped me replace my clutch and it took us about 6 hours in my garage. At that time, neither one of us had a whole lot of experience wrenching on cars (although I had many years of experience wrenching on aircraft). Having someone give you a hand can speed it up quite a bit. We left the transfer case attached and dropped the whole assembly. Best if you have a place to work on it and your standard tool set (nothing fancy). If you haven't got the new clutch kit yet, get one with an alignment tool...that'll save some time.

Be sure to put a new pilot bearing in the flywheel.
