You must be wanting to install lunchbox type (LOCKRITE)
Pull the diff cover and have a look!

You can jack up one rear wheel and with the engine in neutral parking brake off, other wheel blocked so you don't roll away, try to spin the wheel by hand. If it spins pretty freely it's an open diff. If you can't spin it or it is very hard to turn, it has some kind of limited slip setup. Is it a Chrysler diff or a Dana? In 93, according to what I read in the FSM, only Dana rear ends had the trac-Loc. Chryslers had the Sure-grip, a different type of limited slip diff. A trac-LOc is rebuildable a Sure-Grip is not. I'm not sure if the same is true for later years, I only have the 93 FSM for cherokees. The test should work for either the Dana or the Chrysler. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

even if you have a trash lok, you should replace it with a locker. you won't be happy with it.

Yeah that was going to be my next step. But in my owners manual it says that the trac-lock was a optinal thing. And the only reason this came up is because i going to buy a Aussie locker and they said you have to check first if you have a open diff. , but if it is a old Sure-grip or Trac-lock can i jsut take it out and put in the new locker?

if you have a stock lsd, you will need to buy a stock(open) carrier to put a lunchbox style locker in. honestly, i don't know what they cost from a junkyard. if it's outrageous, it may be worth using a locker that replaces the carrier like the detroit or arb.

if you have a stock lsd, maybe you should just run it for a while and see how bad it fails you while you're saving up $$ for a spendy locker.

i guess what i'm trying to say is, if you can get a stock carrier for your axle for free or very cheap, buy a cheap lunchbox locker and go but if your source wants an arm, leg, firstborn, and wife for a night, just nut up and buy the good stuff. arb, detroit, ox.

a quick preliminary way to find out if you have a traction device in your diff is to jack the axle off the ground and spin a tire. if both tires spin the same direction, you most likely have an lsd. if one tire spins opposite of the other, it's open. i would open it up to verify before buying parts though.
