I would wait until you install the O2 sensor and see what your mileage does, if it comes up, you were probably running rich, if it stays the same, the cat may have just went bad, though I would think for the price of the Magnaflows, they should last longer than 4 yrs.

Did the shop ever take a pre-cat reading, this would have told you how well the cat was working or wasn't, and would also indicate if it was running rich.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

I installed the new Denso O2 yesterday. The engine runs slightly smoother, but I will wait until I put a few miles on it to decide. I'll post some pics of the old Bosch versus the Denso later. The Denso definitely sticks out further into the exhaust stream and it also has more openings for the exhaust to travel through it.

It'll be more obvious when I post pictures.

Snowtoy, the shop never took a pre-cat reading, but I think Test 2 would be fairly representative of that. You could see right through the old cat. There were only a few pieces of the catalyst material left in there and they were all broken up. I know for sure the old cat was not working.

Even though the cat was shot, it was still working, if it wasn't those numbers should have been much higher. The '85 carb'd I was having problems with was about 1640 pre cat and 725 post cat. The factory pre-set on the carb was no longer in spec after 20yrs. If the cat wasn't working at all, with numbers that low it would definately indicate a lean mixture.

Just to share my latest experience with the emissions test. My 86 22R is mostly free of emissions equipment but has a catalytic converter. It has a 32/36 Weber, LC Eng Header, Crane Hi6 ignition box. I had tried about everything to get it to pass (new converter), I was having trouble with HC at idle. My last ditch effort was to change out the LC Engineering Street Performer cam with a stock one I got from EB. I also have his ported head with bigger valves. The stock cam took the idle HC from 300+ to 75 and it passed. The HC (67) and CO (.27) at 25 MPH and CO (<.01) at idle were not a problem to begin with. The LC Eng street performer cam had passed previously with a stock head.

Thanks to Ted at Engnbldr for getting me the stock cam in a hurry too, he's the greatest.
