I have an 85 Toy pickup, 22RE, EFI w/ auto trans. When starting cold it fires on the 1st crank, dies, fires on the 2-4th crank and kind of stumbles along for a while with symptoms like it is slightly "over choked", then runs fine. When starting cold after running for the 1st ten seconds or so, it will start ok. I have been checking (ohm meter) things like the cold start switch, efi temp sensor, cold start injector, air control vale, against my toy manual and all seem to check out ok. A while back I used one of those CPU read-out devices (from Kragen auto parts and I don't recall the brand) but was unable to find any info from it. 1) Anyone have any suggestions. p.s: this is my 1st time on the forum so any obvious screw-ups or ommissions that I appear oblivious to I would appreciate feed-back on. tks. dcs14

Welcome to the board
Sounds like you've got alot of troubleshooting done already. When was the last time you did a tune-up? Cap/Rotor/Plugs (and wires?) I don't know if you have fuel starvation issue (filter), or a lack of spark. Also just for kicks, look over the tube from the AFM to the throttle body for hairline cracks in the rubber boot areas. Hope this norrows it down for you.
Also, on a side note, you'll want Nippendenso or NGK plugs.

You may also want to jump the fuel pump test connector. After more pondering, you may be losing fuel pressure in the rail over time while it sits. 4Crawler will probably chime in on his link.

AFM = Air Flow Meter
Side note, I have a somewhat related cold start issue. My truck starts up right away however it does not idle "up" like it should when cold, that is it starts and wants to idle at 750 instead of higher. I haven't done a fuel filter and that is my first guess as maintenance has been neglected by the PO who lived in the boonies and probably used bad gas often possibly creating a clogged fuel filter.
Any other ideas.

Plugging in made no difference. One day, I may try a good used one. But for Phoenix? Not really THAT big of a deal. Plus, I'm lazy now

Idle up is a combination of the computer reading the air temp sensor, coolant sensor and turning on the high idle injector. I would check the wiring to those first to make sure everything is seated properly with no broken connections. And it's always good to clean the TB and air intake.
