I am almost finished buttoning up my 22RE swap into my 84 4Runner. I've got several questions before I fire the motor up.
What oil should I use to break the engine in?
What oil should I use in a 22RE after break-in? I live in CO so it will experience some cold below zero temps every once in awhile.
I primed the oil pump with white lithium grease to help with building oil pressure. After doing this, I was told that Toyota oil pumped don't need primed. Do you think the white lithium grease will be OK in the pump?

What I did was to make sure that everything that needs oil has somekind of oil/reasembly lube on it (espessally the inside of the cylinder walls). I used the 10w-30/10w-40 for 100 low reving miles, I kept RPM's below 3K. Did an oil change and filter after the 100 miles. Then slowly started to drive normally. Then @ 3000 mile change oil again.
Word of caution, use only water @ first. This way if you have any leaks it's not as messy at antifreeze. Once you verify that you have no leaks it is easy to drain, properly mix and fill.

fill out your profile. did you put in a new cam? bored out? I pour oil over everything, if you have it together spray some oil in the cylinders, not wd 40. but oil. I pull the oil pressure sender and use a garden sprayer to pump all 4.5 quarts into the motor, oil filter, ect.
new cam, says 20 min at 2000 to 2500 rpm. new rings are the same.
but on the other hand I had a old crusty friend that said a well built motor needs no break in, drive it like you are going to drive it. he then started a rebuilt race car motor and held it at around 8000 rpm, it was so loud and shait was spinning so fast I backed out of the way. I get afraid of closed spaces with stuff spinning that fast. he was checking the timing during this. when he let off, it just dropped down to a blubb blubb blubb of a huge cam. I really don't know the rpm.. but I had never heard a motor rev that high before. oh it was a chevy small block, I don't remember the size. I do remember that the carb looked like it should have a flush handle on the front of it!!! his motors won races all the time. he would not build your motor unless he liked you.

I'm in Pueblo, 1.5 hours south of you.
Yes, new EB 268 cam. Bored out 30 thousands. I haven't sprayed oil in the cylinders. Will the oil in the cylinders foul the plugs? I put quite a bit of assembly lube on the cam and rockers.
10W-30 to break in, 20 mintues at 2000 RPM. What kind of oil should I run after that? Thanks for the tip about straight water. Toyota Red or prestone green?
Sorry for the hundred questions, just want to get this right the first time.

I just did my motor over the summer. The new motor has less than 2K <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I run the Green stuff. I can find it anywhere and everywhere. I Just wouldn't mix them.
Oil on the cylinder walls will just make the motor smoke for a little while. I just didn't want bare metal on metal. I took a paper towel/shop rag with 10w-30/10w-40 on it and wiped the cylinder walls with that. Make sure your rings are nice and lubed too.
After the break in oil, I just put in another 4.5-5quarts of 10w-30/10w-40. I just wouldn't just the high, $$$ performace oils that are out there. I hear that they don't let the motor break in right. Don't know if it is true or not but just to be safe. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
