I have a non ABS truck that needs a new rear diff. I found one via car-part, but it says it has ABS on it. Will that be an issue or is it something I can remove?

tks

not an issue at all. You can keep the top piece connected to the diff, and just cut the cable. Got 2 like that in my 4Runner.

Easy to install: just slide a socket into the cap and tap a few times with a hammer.

Some 94/95 4Runners and all third gens should have the ABS sensors at the axle ends. The freeze/frost plug trick is for the single circuit rear ABS used from 89-95+ that used the ring gear as the "tone ring".

Said Runner is a 2.7L plain jane 4x4, so ABS was actually optional (and no ABS light when I put the key to 'on')

Just a little trivia...no ABS on the dog's Runner.

Now you have me a little curious Margie as in my limited experience with 3rd generation 4Runners I have never seen one without ABS?

Does your rear axle have the tone rings and recessed axle seal as shown below or is it missing those as well?

Jason, to be honest, I've only had the 4R since July, so haven't had to really tear into it, other than getting the truck on a maintenance schedule, given no records. The truck has had only 3 owners (I'm #3; #2 had it for only 2 months)--a real grocery getter.

I can say this, without a teardown:

No ABS light when keyed
No ABS sensor on rear axle
Doing a hard brake from 60 mph does not result in ABS activation
No associated relays, etc are mounted in the engine compartment

I'll try and source for you where I discovered ABS was an option for the 2.7L 4x4, and edit this.

EDIT: 3rd gen info There are a couple other personal sites which have the ABS-optional mentioned; but this is a good writeup overall.

Eighty-eight, yeah, I looked for the ABS components with some help from the FSM, that's one of the reasons I'm fairly sure I don't have ABS. BTW that hard stop from 60 mph I managed in less than 200 feet; I didn't baby it. Picture an 800 pound moose launching out of the willows....

just take a look to see if the brake lines run from the m/c to a hydraulic control unit (HCU).
easiest guaranteed way to tell if its got abs.

and if the newer 4runners have wheel speed sensors on the axles, then they prob dont have em at the diff. just a thought, i dont own one.

Picked up front and rear diffs for a grand total of $350 from an awesome junkyard in Charlottesville called Harry Wrights

Question - front diff is ADD, but my truck is manual hubs. I read the tech article about defeating ADD and realize that that is probably the path of least resistance. However, I would prefer to actually implement the ADD. Anybody ever took a manual hub truck and make it ADD? I am thinking that I would simply lock the front hubs and then I would have to run some sort of vacuum to the diff and control through a switch somehow... just that simple, right ?

Thanks much!
