I have a 1997 4Runner V6 5speed with 155k on it. Normally when you push in the clutch and try to start it, it starts right away. What just started happening yesterday is when I go to start it nothing happens. No roll over or anything like its completely dead. When I move the key to the ACC position and let it sit there for 5-10 seconds then attempt to start it, it starts right up with no hesitation. Anyone know what may cause this to have to start this way? Maybe something is going? Please help. Thank you,

Let me guess... Just a "click" when you turn the key?
Replace the contacts in the starter. There is a very detailed article in the tech section covering this. It will cost you a few hours of time, and less than $20 in parts.

Another thing I noticed too, is that this will only happen when the 4runner sits for a period of time like overnight when i try it first thing in the morning, or when I get in it after work and its been sitting all day. When I stop at the store or for gas it starts right up first try. I don't think I hear a clicking noise, I will listen more carefully next time. Any other suggestions from the info i just provided?

Tonight I found that I had to give it gas to finally start one of the times. This happened in the past year once a month where it would turn over everytime on the first try but i had to give it gas to start. Could this be the fuel pump too or related?

Either that or your fuel or cold start injectors are leaking, which means the fuel rail pressure bleeds off. Give your oil dipstick a whiff and see if it smells like fuel.

Are you saying that the starter doesn't energize at all- or that the engine turns but doesn't fire? One would be an electrical/starter problem and the other is a possible fuel or sensor problem. Could you be more specific?

I had the same problem for a while. Eventually it got so bad that the starter would not disengage at times, and it killed the battery too. Replace the contacts, or if you want, replace the starter with one that has a lifetime warranty.
