2. Can't yet remove the oil seal so if you have a trick let me know - while trying to pry it, a steel band O-Ring slipped out from underneath it; it was between the oil seal and the inner bearing/race. This does not appear in any of the procedures or manuals - anyone got a clue what this might be? Perhaps it was part of the seal? The new seals I have do not have this.

Sounds like you pulled out the little "spring" inside the seal that keeps pressure on the lip. You'll know when you've got the whole seal out. Just got keep working at it. Shouldn't be too hard, but sometimes they're a little stubborn.

my tried and true trick is to take a punch or drift or even a screwdriver or chisel and *dent* the seal's flat outward facing surface in one or more spots. this effectively pulls the sealing surface away from the hub and it is an easy matter of prying it out with a screwdriver.

it goes without saying (except i'm going to say it), *always* be careful that you do *not* scratch or otherwise screwup the hub's sealing surface in your endeavors to remove the seal.

it is part of the seal. it's a spring to help keep the lip of the seal firmly against the axle sealing surface. your new seals should also have them, just look 'inside' between the two lips. it's a good practice to fill that space with grease to help make sure that spring stays in place on installation.

1. The snap ring that's supposed to be 26 mm is actually 20 mm on my wheel - I'm measuring ID and if that's not right, please let me know - either way it's smaller than specified but seemd to fit, any issue here?

No issue with that. Some models used 26mm and some used a smaller one. I think it depends on auto or manual hubs and what year, I'm not sure. I dont know the size of the smaller one.

Great! THanks for clearing all this up for me - I'll take a closer look for that steel band in the new seals, otherwise I have a feeling I may have bought the wrong seal part number. I'll get it down and report back.

Let me ask philosophical question here: My local mechanic and friend suggests this job is "over my head" and really not necessary - "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

I think that is pretty good advice. That is the reason I never change my oil. As long as the engine is running it's fine. If it dies, just put in a new engine and you can add oil then. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

I think I'm dealing with my bearings tomorrow. I'll post up with any questions.
