Need a Spot
New to the montero and have a question about the AT overdrive. This is on my 89 V6 lwb montero. The overdrive does not like to engage consistantly. Seems to work sometimes if it is warm but not all the time. My freeway drive today it did not kick in at all. The button turns on and off the light, but thats it.

Anyone know what might be going on?

thanks!

Welcome! There are several threads on this problem, so I suggest trying a search. Also, a factory manual set is worthwhile.

For a quick run-down:

There's a 1-wire engine coolant temperature switch on the driver side of the thermostat housing.... it serves as a lockout until the engine is at operating temperature... ground the wire.... if the O/D then works, the switch is bad - if it won't let the transmission shift with a warm engine.

There's an O/D OFF relay on the passenger side footwell wall.

There's an O/D OFF solenoid on the transmission.

There's an O/D OFF switch on the shifter.

There's the ignition switch that supplies power to all of the above.

Any of those could be the source of the trouble, but the engine coolant temperature switch would be my first guess.

Frank
