1990-1995 4Runner Stock Rear Bumper Differences? #757272 10/12/06 05:17 PM

Ok I feel stupid. I'm going to get a replacement stock rear bumper center section for a '95 4Runner I just picked up. There are several on Ebay for a good price, such as from carparts.com, however, there are two "types" of chrome rear bumper center sections. The first kind simply says it's for 15x7" wheels. The other bumper center section says it's for w/o 15x7" wheels. I don't get how the wheel size matters for the bumper. I even called them, and they couldn't describe it to me any better!

Anyone have a clue what the difference is? It thought there was only one kind of rear bumper. My 4Runner does not have the swing-out tire carrier. Both styles of bumpers on Ebay show the hole for the spare tire rod for 4Runners that DON'T have a swing-out tire carrier, so it would seem like that wouldn't matter....

I'm sort of guessing here but I think I recall that there is a difference in the setup for the winch that holds the spare tire up on the trucks that came with the 31X10.5 tires. If so, then the hole in the bumper may be in a slightly different spot.

That?s right. When you have 31" (or 265/75R15) tires stock, you?ve 31" spare tire also. And "the winch" angle is different between those models. Check: http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/downloads/ToyotaSurfOwnersManual.pdf

Well, that makes sense. My '90 4Runner came with stock 15x6 wheels, and the spare tire rod goes straight back to the winch (with a chain). The '95 4Runner came with 15x7 wheels stock, and the rod goes off to the side (over the exhaust pipe), then angles over via a U-joint to the winch (cable version). I removed the '95 bumper (rusty) via sawzall last night, and there's a plastic sleeve that bolts to the underside of the top of the bumper to guide the spare tire rod to the right place. I don't recall this plastic piece being on the '90 4Runner, especially since it would point the rod in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the help! I ordered the bumper last night. Off Ebay, carparts.com was only 187.xx for the rear bumper center section and end caps (in chrome). That's quite a deal considering the end caps used to be a dealer-only item and were $200 each.
