So I sold my second toyota truck and am looking to get a 4-runner... 90-95 model. Most of the ones I'm finding are autos. I've always had manual transmission trucks. Are the auto trannys in these worth a crap off-road and on?? Does the 3.0 have enough ass to move a set of 33's on stock gears?? I appreciate your input.
I'm between toyotas right now... 3rd Gen 4-runner soon.

The 3.0/auto combo was the reason it was given the name 3.sl0!
Wait it out... A 5 speed will eventually come along.

word. I've got a 3.slo and I called it that before I ever looked it up on the net..
How hard is it to convert an auto to a manual? I have a 5 speed tranny from my wrecked 89 3.0 (which flew in comparison) and I would really like to put it into my 94. Just not sure how to go about it with cutting holes in the floor for a clutch pedal and putting the stickshift through the hole where the auto was. Has anyone atempted this move?

Remove everything from your other truck, and swap it in... Too easy.
You already have the crossmember, brackets, lines, and all. You don't cut a hole in the floorboard... The clutch pedal mounts to a bracket, and feeds through the firewall. There is already a predesignated spot for it.

word. Do you have a suggestion for a good manual? I like pretty pictures and ***** when I take apart things for the first time. Sounds fun though, I think that swapping transmissions is going to the most labor intensive part right. Oh and what about pulling the engine out in the first place? I suppose I'll need a place to hang it.. I've heard that it is required to take the front end apart of mid 90's 4runners in order to even pull the engine out.?

Search online for a writeup on the swap... Several have done it, and some even documented it with pictures.
You don't need to take the front end off the truck to remove the engine... Just take the hood off. When the radiator is out, there is plenty of room to get the engine out. Remember, a 4 cyl is longer than a V6, and the 4yl fits through the hood opening fine.
I even removed my eingine/tranny/t-case as one unit before, right out of the hood opening.
Use a cherry picker to remove it, and an engine stand to hold it in place.
