Mudrunner
It is time to do do a rebuild. I have an 85 22r truck that needs it now and an 85 22re runner. I have decided I would like to buy a another engine on craigs or wherever and swap them around because my 4runner is due for a rebuild soon as well.
This way I will have an engine ready to go if I need one, and if I dont need one I can always sell it. I know a feew others who I could swap with as well.
I would like to put an RE in the truck, but I dont think smog here in cali would appreciate that.
So in short I guess I am asking if I buy a used 22re can I use that block for my 22R. I have looked and I dont see why I cant.
Thanks

22re has a threaded hole for the knock sensor, and the 22r does not. otherwise their the same.
(as long as the engines are both 1985+)

22r head has the drive for the fuel pump and 22re head does not. it can be capped off though to use in an efi application.

To add to what 88 said, take a look near the oil filter boss, and you'll see a threaded hole for the knock sensor.
I've also read of someone welding a nut onto the block for a carb-EFI conversion; it's only a piezo sensor, so if you can find a threaded nut, you've got a candidate.

The main thing is that you don't want to mix/match pre-85 and post-85 heads/blocks, as the deck heights are different; hence the timing chains are 3 links different, and you'll never get it set up.

Also, if you pop the valve cover off both rigs, and take a look at the cam, you'll see a cog for your 22R fuel pump to ride on, where there is only a spacer in that spot on your 22RE. You'll have to move that cog over onto your donor , and you're good to start putting it together.

Pretty straightforward, aside from the year differences.

If the head is getting moved, take it to the machine shop and get it touched up first, or you'll be redoing a head gasket.
