Greetings from Santa Cruz,
Our 94' 4Runner (Black Betty) has blown a head gasket
Oh well...with 170K+ miles on this engine, should I replace rather than repair? I won't be doing the work, so no great savings on the repair. Otherwise, what brand of head gasket is best? Felco? or the Toyota gasket, or are they the same? Any brands to avoid?
Thanks much, Hugh

Well, prices for rebuilt engines are a bit too much for me to shell out at this time.
Advice I found on 4x4wire, don't spend more than the car is worth. Looks like the head gasket repair will be good enough, along with a new knock sensor, timing belt, possible water pump. Any thing else to replace while the motor is out?
Thanks much,
Hugh

How about camshaft seals. Ofcourse new head bolts if you didn't already know. You really don't have to remove the engine to do this work. I just did one two weeks ago and left the engine in the truck. Less work. I used a kit from ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYO...yZ33617QQihZ003QQitemZ130037743121QQrdZ1

The fleabay reference made is also someone we in the Yota section here buy from directly as well; Ted's a good guy. www.engnbldr.comWe also have several articles in the maintenance section you can check out to see what other stuff you can take care of while the engine is down; via the Toyota section in the header above. We also have a '93 FSM sticky'd in the early trucks section for your perusal. Remember to change your oil and filter; might be contaminated with coolant.

update: engine block is warped and requires tear down. So, I'm forced with going for a rebuilt and I can't afford this while paying for one child in college.
I feel the need to cut my loses and go in another direction...maybe tow it home and think about it.

Update 10/31/06: I dropped off the motor today at the machine shop. With a special jig made for this 3.0L, they are able to deck the block without removing the pistons, rods and crank. No other shop could do this work without a complete tear down. The motor should be ready tomorrow
