Not your exact problem, but my '83 used to have a real hesitation when I stomped on it but when my engine was cold. I adjusted the valves and she was like a new animal. I think Scerb may have hit the nail on the head with the choke, but after that, check your valves and check your timing. Two very easy things to do.

yes the sputtering only happens when the truck is warmed up and operating on highway at speeds above 45. The idle is fine. I will check the carb and see from there. Thanks a lot.

I had this same problem with my 22R a while back. I changed the fuel pump and it did help a little. However the problem didn't go away until I rebuilt the carb. So my guess is you have the exact same problem. When I would get over 40 mph or so it sporadically bog down. Not all the time but when it did it would slow down fast. It just felt like there was no horse power. I was driving it on the interstate and it would go from 70 down to about 40mph, it would finally come out of it but would eventually do it again. Hope this helps

The 22R fuel pumps never fail. Ya, I pretty much mean never. Its mechanical and theres really not much that can go wrong with it. When you replaced yours you got the placebo effect.
Rebuilding the carb however is a very possible solution. There are just a few simple things to be tried first before the carb should be torn down.

pull the air cleaner cover with the engine warm. Check that the choke is opening. If it is closed that is your problem.
