My current rear axle is an IFS style so its wider. The rear has no brakes even though there is plenty of fluid going to it and Ive bled it over and over again. No luck, brake pedal to the floor and still able to hand turn my rear tires.

Bought some different shafts and drums from a friend because the drums on my current ones won't come off and the adjusters are frozen. I got the old axle out and tried to install the replacement one (off a 92) and it goes in all but 1/4 inch. Can I just use the studs on the backing plate to draw it in the last little bit? That didnt sound like the best idea at the time so i put my original shafts back in and still have no rear brakes.

The bearings on the replacment axles are flush with the retainer and it seems that is the problem with the axles going into the housing. What is the best way to get those bearings set in a little further? I dont have a shop press or a spare rear housing to make the SST for this project.

I do it all the time, just tighten in a cross pattern 1/2-3/4 turns on the nuts.

I just went through this and had the same problem. Turns out that I needed to bleed, bleed and bleed again to get my brakes to come back. There was air in behind fluid. The driver side rear would pump fluid... then on about the 3rd time trying to bleed it it blew air out.

I didn't have any trouble getting axle shafts back all the way in.Once the splines were lined up I was golden.

I dont think the brake problem is air in the lines in my case. I have used a vacuum bleeder and sucked about 8 oz. of fluid through each drum as well as the LSPV so that should have pretty much cleared out all the fluid from the lines. Im pretty sure its somthing inside the drums that is messed up.

Ill definatly let you know how it worked out for me though!

Using the axle studs to pull the bearing into the retainer worked great! Axles are all in but the brakes still dont grab at all back there. Time to ditch my LSPV and put a standard one in that I just ordered from Summit.

best of luck, i hope she gets you there .. i have faith in that engine though... ive built a couple and they are pretty hard to kill, just keep oil and coolant in it. if the head gasket blows drive it until it wont run anymore. as long as you dont see coolant in the oil you should be ok, watch for the timing chain goin gthrough the timing cover , that will allow coolant in the oil and will seem like a head gasket blown. you can drive it that way too just not very far. i drove one like that with coolant going in the oil for over 200 miles, i just stopped and filled it up with water every 50 miles. good luck and keep us posted.

I do not understand how the brakes could have anyting to do with putting the axles back in. Here is what was happening on my axles.



As far as having a hard time bleeding, I have never had any luck with my vacuum pump, but that is jus me. Is this the pattern you use to bleed your brakes, longest line to the shortest then the LSPV?
