Getting the Wheeling Fever
I am looking at my options for replacing my Gen I SWB, I really like the Gen II SR Monteros, but can't seem to find a link to my questions here, so If there are good answers here please let me know where to look.
I want to know about the differential on these trucks, how they work,Part time, fulltime, are they viscous, can I lock & unlock it in both hi & low? also, the rear locker, is it pneumatic? is there an option for installing a locker (part time) on the front?

Thanks, Your help will keep me away from the Range Rover Classics that I know will send me to the poor house.

I know more about the gen1 but I also own a gen2. The early SRs 92-93? have open diffs, not sure the locker was a option. The factory lockers are pneumatic. I dont know about locking in hi and low, I guess you could bypass the controll thing. On the larger front diffs, again, not sure the years, you can get an ARB. ARBs are also made for the rear, I have one in my 93SR. Others will jump in and fill in the gaps. I do know the big rear axles have a 9.25 in ring gear, 31 spline, 35mm shafts, that is fairly big.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

With the 'Super Select' system found in the Gen2's you can engage the factory rear locker while in 4 High, locked center diff or 4 Low, locked center diff. You would have to fiddle with the wiring to have the rear locker engaged in 2 High. Normally I run in 2wd, but if the conditions are lousy I run in 4 High (essentially AWD with the center diff in viscous mode). In short, the Gen2 offers:

2wd High
4wd High (AWD)
4wd High Lock
4wd Low Lock
4wd Low Lock and rear locked (if you have the factory locker)

If you have an ARB I suppose you could lock it whenever you felt the need.

Roll Me Over
I've fiddled Actually Augie fiddled and I re-fiddled.

Search for posts older than 4yrs by Augie with this topic's keywords if you want to do something like that.

Thanks, Your help will keep me away from the Range Rover Classics that I know will send me to the poor house. [/quote]- Hmm, funny, I went from a '94 Range Rover Classic to my '92 Montero SR just because I WAS driven to the poor house by the RR So, I can really relate to that statement
All the above info seems to cover your questions, let us know if we left something out. PS. I believe an ARB kit for the front is finally available, but not sure which years it fits

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well thank you all!
Yeah I am just coming to the conclusion that the RR will kill me financially. I already have a VW Vanagon Syncro that needs locker work & that's a grand & change an axle not to mention the manual drive disconnect that will set me back $1,500 & a Jeep SJ that will require $$$'s just to keep it from falling apart!

I have had nothing but reliability with my SWB and it has NEVER gotten me stuck on the trails. I have been thinking about a LWB gen1 or an early Trooper, but the gen II SR's just have so much going for them AT LESS THAN HALF THE COST OF AN FZJ 80!
It's funny, I was looking around here today & read a few articles about locker installation, and was drooling over the thought of drilling a small hole where the front diff goes on the dash indicator & adding a led behind there activated by the system when engaged!

Oh yeah, was the super select (and rear locker) available from 92 on up? and when did the 3.5 come out? I have read conflicting years on that one 93, 95 etc.
Thank you all,
Harry

Never got stuck, you are not trying hard enough.

My 93 has "Active Track" with no rear locker. Well, no factory locker.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

SR Gen2s could have a rear locker from '92 on, but it seems pretty rare on the earliest of the Gen 2s, not a popular option back then. The 3.5 liter for USA made its debut with the '94 SR Montero. I still have a 4 wheeling magazine from 1994 that ran a head to head comparision on the new 3.5 liter equipped Montero and a Range Rover Classic.
Hope this helps you out.

The Syncro is a cool rig. I'd love a Weekender, maybe a Euro front locker too...but they are pricey machines indeed.
