I got a Warn winch from a friend, it says it is an 8403 but it looks the same as an 8274, and I've seen a couple of comments on the internet to suggest it is the same thing.

I've gone to the Warn website and I have the owner's manual for the 8274-50. Am I safe to assume it is the same wiring? I've asked warn for the manual for the 8403. But I thought I would ask here what experience people have had with this winch, and is it more or less the same as an 8274?

Good and bad about this? What should I check out before trying to use it?

Follow up - I got a wiring diagram from Warn, now I'm lead to my next question.

Best way to mount this on the 2000. It is currently set up on a 2 inch receiver.

I've looked around for a 2 inch receiver for the 2000 4 runner but they do not seem to be available.

Any suggestions?

you need to setup a really stout interface for that winch.

a looooong time ago, when i was looking for winches, i asked warn what they think about the 8274 and having a portable mount for it.

at that time, they said it wasnt a recommended practice with that winch.

but like a few years later, i saw a samurai with a 8274 with a hitch mount.

but then again, it was a custom made mount, whereas, i asked warn about their porta mount.

in any case, if you still want to porta mount the winch, it's not impossible.

remember, the only thing holding the winch (well in my case, a xdi 9000) to the mount is four grade 8 (or were they grade 5) bolts.

so that is the weak point. making the mount as sturdy as possible is the key.

i had a custom made mount from a frame from a ford f-350. it was a c-channel frame cut to side to hold the winch.

then a custom front hitch (back then, no one sold one) that bolts onto each side of the frame (where the tow hooks are). on each side, 3 bolts are used.

then a gusseted crossmember that holds the actual receiver.

i have winched myself sideways (from winch to a tree to the immediate right hand side of vehicle, then using a snatch block, to the terminating point on the rear bumper.

i pulled myself sideways enough to prevent falling off the side of the trail.

the winch and mounts worked perfectly. as designed.

of course the winch in the mount probably weighs close to 150 pounds...

Thanks Leo for the info.

The mount that it is on is custom built.. good point about the mount to the vehicle I will have to see.. I may just keep it for a future project rebuilding my 81 pickup.

Been there , listen think it might be a good idea to take the hard ware ie the solinoids (spelling s ) into the engine bay and fix the connector for your 15ft control cable some where on your grill. I made ***** of mine by mounting the pick control gear on the bumber ,small tree branch just swiped the control box right off the bumper ,. No jokes please about using scoth tape .
