I ask some question to Jeff Kerr @ www.acmeadapters.com and here is what i got.

"Originally these adapters were used in our suzuki applications for use with
the 22R 4 cylinder style transmission 1979-1996, then over to toyota trucks.
At this time we only have the basic kit to mate the VW engine to the toyota
transmission, you will need to fabricate the other bracketry as needed. Some
have found less fabrication is needed by using the Acme engine mounting
brackets from our sidekick/tracker application and only fabricate the frame
side of the mounts. This kit enables you to reuse your original style toyota
clutch set and starter. The clutch used with this kit is the earlier model 22R
toyota 8-7/8 inch disc.

With this kit you receive the adapter plate, machined toyota flywheel,
selflubricating oilite pilot bushing, bolting hardware and instructions.
These sell for $575 and includes shipping to USA addresses.

There have been a few of these done, mostly in pickups and most seem happy
with it and are using the Canadian 1.9TD AAZ engines. If you are wanting to
use a TDI they are a bit more complicated than the earlier model diesels
due to VW's immobilization and wiring. "

I think you can still purchase new long blocks and turnkey engines through Overland:

The 1.9D in my VW was purchased as a new long block:

The non-TDI engines are all mechanical, require one wire to power the fuel cutoff solenoid on the pump.

allochris,

What ACME said is true, the NA diesel is the easiest to do second is the turbo diesel. But I say $%#^@ easy I want to make my life so rough that I have to slam my male parts in a vise just for something easy to do.

No I just wanted to do the TDI because I like the response of the engine and it is a bit more challenging.

Cheers Y'ALL

Getting the Wheeling Fever
The TDI motor, most likely the ALH code is a nice base for this mod. Plenty of upgrade parts can be purchased here in the US. There is a difference between the 5 speed and the auto engines. If you can, try to get a auto. It has a higher diesel pressure pump and smaller injectors. Very easy and cheap to change the injectors to something bigger but not so easy to change the pump. The injectors alone will give you 20HP and 40ft.lbs for a misely $ 50.- used.

Eck,

Thanks for the heads up, I am getting a manual engine. The reason for that is it is $200 and had low miles.

But something everyone should think about when considering this conversion is what it's intended use is, especially before you mod the engine. Diesels are a great thing but they have awesome torque. The only problem here is that all the torque will find the weak link. And where the turbo spools, the torque band and all might be a little tuff when you throw how we treat our rigs on the trails. SO I am just going to throw a stock TDI in for now.
I personally daily drive, crawl, cruise the mountain backroads and such. I have no intention of competing with this vehicle. And for all of this the 22re is really fine for me, Toyota did a great job when they designed this engine and mine only has 30,000 miles on the rebuild, and it was a solid rebuild no cheapo parts were used here.
My goal is to make my own fuel and get great mileage. I hate stressing in the mountains about getting low on fuel, jerry cans, blah blah. The other part is to end my reliance on oil companies who continue to gouge us at the pumps while reporting record profits quarter after quarter, at the same time telling us the high prices are due to supply and demand. As well as to support the diesel movement in the US. WHY IN THE #$&* CAN WE NOT GET NEW TOYOTA DIESELS IN THE USA WHEN THEY SELL LIKE HOTCAKE EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD!!!
I know others have different opions on the entire above paragraph, this is just my feeling.
The business I am in allows me to see and hear things that the ave. joe would never get to see or hear, and this is what sealed the deal for me doing this swap. It's like working for a boss or owner that is just a real horrible person and everyday even though you are getting payed to do a job, provide incurance for your family, new house car and all that which is great. At the end of the day we just helped make some ass%$#& that much richer.

Ok enough rambling
Mojo

I also drive a 2003 Golf TDI with the 1.9 engine. Changed the turbo, injectors and Dieselpump. All that with a software upgrade gets you ~ 180 HP (motor) and I limited the torque to 280ft.lbs. It's my daily driver so I don't want to stress the components too much but I have friends that are around 230 HP motor.
Best is, no smog check, exempt <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Is this the motor that starts out with 90hp and 149 ft lbs torque!!?

Question to throw into this:

I looked at doing a TDI swap in my B3 passat, and one of the issues I came across was needing to put a different geared tranny, as my standard tranny would rev out too quickly. Any body have any idea or experience with yota tranny's and their gearing w/ vw diesels?

Or am I missing another piece of the puzzle?

A VW diesel is good to 3000 rpm... It falls on it's face rapidly afterwards.

You should be fine with a W56 and 4.10:1 gearing... If you have 33" tires, you will be cruising 70 mph @ 2500 rpm in 5th gear.

Speaking of which, is the adapter compatible with G58 tranny? Or is it just W56?
