A VW diesel is good to 3000 rpm... It falls on it's face rapidly afterwards.

You should be fine with a W56 and 4.10:1 gearing... If you have 33" tires, you will be cruising 70 mph @ 2500 rpm in 5th gear.

Is an 8-7/8" clutch up to the job of hooking up 33" tires through 4.10 gears? Seems like it would be a weak link. -- Matt

If anybody is up for the swap, I can get the much more powerful ARL motor (PD) with stock 150 hp and 250ft.lbs for roughly $ 2500.-. I'm dealing with Diesel parts from Germany to the US for some tuning companies and anybody that is interested in it.
With just chipping it, you're already in the 180hp range and lots more torque but how do you get it registered?

This VW diesel swap has really piqued my interest but I am also having the frustration that comes with being low down on the learning curve.

So, what exactly is "the much more powerful ARL motor (PD) with stock 150 hp and 250ft.lbs"?

I am also wondering if the late model TDI electronic injected motors could be run with a Megasquirt aftermarket ECU thereby eliminating the troublesome (and expensive) VW electronics. How cool would it be to get all the technological advances incorporated into the later TDI motors without the electronic hassles! -- Matt

Getting the Wheeling Fever
The ARL motor is used as the high performance Diesel engine in Germany and other parts of Europe.
It's a really good base for tuning and overall reliability. You have to use the VW ECU. There's no other way around it. This engine is too complicated for any stand alone systems since they turbo is vacuum controlled with variable vane technology rather then a waste gate on the turbo. It has pumpe duese injectors which are also controlled by the ECU in terms of timing and injection quantity.
A Diesel engine is a very different technology to work with. There is no butterfly to control rpm and power. This is completely done by the amount of Diesel injection. We don't have a situation where your engine can run lean. If it smokes you add air, if you have a lot of air and it doesn't slightly smoke under WOT, you add fuel. That's it. Nothing else matters, as long as your timing is correctly set.
Check out www.tdiclub.com and look for the performance section. You'll find enough info about the engines etc. It's a very good forum.

Megasquirt injectors are still "batch" fired - meaning the banks are fired in groups. Diesels require a sequential injection, which megasquirt isn't capable of currently.

Look for it in the near future, however..

Will DO boys and ladies ,
Abigail was already planning on taking lots of pictures. And I will make sure to document and take pics off all parts and pieces before they are put on and during installation.
In a week or so I will post the CAD of the motor mounts. We are going to use our friends CNC machine to make the mounts. The drawing should allow you to give the file to your local shop.
On the engine side of things, while looking for a motor we contacted several salvage yards and we were finding low mileage TDIs' for $500-$800.

In regards to the WVO/SVO system: there are so many versions out there and everyone has its advantages and disadvantages. We are looking at both the single tank and dual tank system. I like the single tank because you do not have to purge your system but there are still some unanswered questions for me there. Rather than go into my stupid rantings I will just post some links to sites.

I am putting the below link on hre for all who wish to keep using gas. The website is choppy but the technology and application are real close to being useable.

I have a dumb question. Has anyone looked into swapping a toyota diesel? While obviously parts would be a bit hard to come by in the states, would that hassle be worth the hassles *hopefully* avoided since the swap should be a bolt/plug in?

That is a very cool site.

I haven't seen any discussion on importing engines with the engine ECU's (if that's possible). Of course you would probably still have to worry about mounts, etc... at least your stock radiator is more than up for the task.

I'm stoked to hear about the results of the swap, I've been kicking around diesel ideas for a while (Yota, Benz, Volvo) and this seems to be the best option with the trans adapter etc already available. Time to start saving for a TDI and grease kit smile

From what my tech's tell me the power band in the TDI is solid from about 1500 to 4500 rpm...

Also you can unlock a few HP by using this http://www.ross-tech.com/ we have a few customers that have used this and swear by it... Also alot of VW tech's use it as well...
