when i did my sas about 6 months ago, i rebuilt the front axle. about 2 week ago i noticed the long side axle seal was leaking. not bad, but the bottom of the felt was wet with gear oil. i figured i had messed up the seal when i put the long side axle in (only had about 500 miles on the setup), so i took it apart and replaced the seal.

well, its leaking again. not bad. just a bit wet on the bottom of the felt. axle does not have a groove in it, and i was really careful installing the axle, so im pretty sure i didnt mess it up. any ideas? its not a huge problem, but it IS driving me nuts.

Make sure the axle shaft sealing surface is contacting the seal and not able to push in too far:

If that is OK, see if the axle shaft is centered properly, if not, adjust the steering arm shims.

Knuckles may not be centered. You need the SST to do it correctly.

say what?

and arn't the steering arm shims just for kingpin bearing preload? er wait. you have the install shims evenly on both sides of the knuckle correct? cause i may not have done that..

Edit: 4crawler, on your martack article, thats a tack weld on the differential side of the axle am i understanding correctly?

No, the bottom shims are for centering the knuckle. The top shims are for adjusting he preload. You cannot go by what shims are correct for one will make them correct for the other. The last time I rebuilt my front I was able to use the SST and both sides took different amouts of shims. One of the measurments you take is the distance between the mounting surfaces on the top and bottom of the knuckle. They were not the same on the PS and DS knuckle.

Click on this link and go to page FA-54 and it will show you the SST I used and the correct way to set the knuckles up. This is the FSM.

Yes, used in place of the internal clip in the Birfield. Makes it much easier to work on the axle when it can just slide in and out of the Birf.

OOP's- sweet dude, i most likely set up my knuckles completly wrong. all i did was set the preload. will have to check into that.

4crawler- yeah, ill have to do that, seems like a good idea.
