Sounds like one of the oil plugs is missing... I had the same problem when rebuilding my engine... left the plug out of the bottom (under the oil pan...)

Ken

I removed the bolts on the oil pan, got it down far enough to notice a threaded hole beneath the oil pressure sending unit, which lies below the filter. I'm assuming this is the rub. I also neglected putting a gasket at the pickup.

So, my new problem is getting the oil pan out. How is this done without pulling the motor or dropping the front dif?

I have a solid front axle truck (not sure what you have), but if you are having trouble getting clearance to remove the pan, you could probably unbolt the engine from the mounts (or the mounts from the frame, lift the engine with a hoist (it will lift a few inches with engine still attached to transmission), and maybe have enough room to pull the pan??? Someone else chime in if I'm wrong...

Sounds like you missed that oil galley plug... same one that caught me...

Yup it was the oil galley plug. Very frustrating...

I ended up lifting the engine, removing the top steering linkage and pulling the pan out with the pickup.

Tommorow night I will put it all back together. Should have him on the road Wed.

The deep despair is passed. For now...
