Doing homework because I don't like paying for gasoline and I could use a little more power than my stock 120 HP/150Ft/Lb torque...

I have a pickup truck that could have been powered by a 4G63 Gasoline engine.

My truck (1989 Mazda B2600i 4x4) in earlier years (1987-88) contained a 2.6L version of the 4G63 Mitsubishi engine. Same drivetrain, different bellhousing. (In fact the Starion guys use that truck's bellhousing with RX-7 Turbo transmissions in their cars.

Being that I can get one of these bellhousings and attach it to my transmission, I can easily convert my truck to use the 4G63 engine block pattern.

Will the 4D56 engine bolt up to a 4G63 bell housing? How about a 4M40/4M41? I've read here about swaps being almost plug-n-play, but it wasn't listed whether a different bell housing was used.

Secondly, would there be any issue running any of these engines on something other than Low Sulphur Diesel? I know common rail Diesel engines have problems on anything but low sulphur... Which we don't have here in the States. As alluded to at the beginning, I'm looking into Biodiesel and/or Waste Vegetable Oil.

Not that I looked at converting gas to a diesel engine but I think you would also need to exchange or modify the transmission. I was looking into replacing my 4D56's transmission with the Montero gasoline engine transmission and it was a no go because of gear ratrio. So a straight swap if the bell housing lines up might be ok but I would check to see how the transmission will work out.

Pele,

The 2.5Td is not a "performance" engine, so if your quest is for more power, you might be disappointed.

If you insist on going diesel for power, you will have to go 4m40 or 4m41 (as I Di-D <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />).

Easiest (and best, IMHO) is to find a complete drive train (engine-t'case). The 4m4* engine does not bolt up to your tranny, but anything can be made to fit, I suppose.

Gearing is an issue. I still run my 1:4.88 diffs with 31" BFGs, but the ratios would be better with 1:4.2 / 1:4.1 diffs. In the mean time I am planning to fit 33" tyres as soon as the budget allows.

Well, torque is my concern. I use this truck for towing my track day car around as well as various car parts.

I'm sure the diesel has more torque than the petrol engine.

I'm not sure how I can fabricate a custom bellhousing to adapt anything else to my transmission. I don't have access to a CNC mill anymore.

My options are either the US spec Mazda G6 engine, the 4G63 wide block, or the foreign market Mitsubishi or Mazda 2.5L turbo diesels.

Update:

I am no longer going for a massive upgrade in power, as this truck is not going to be doing any towing any more...

I bought a Ford F350 Flatbed tow truck and am getting rid of the trailer. The Mazda pickup will be a daily driver/offroad vehicle.

So, since the 4G63 Wideblock to 4D56 swap is a bolt in affair it looks like I'll go this route barring a few concerns:

1.) How easy is it to get this engine in the states? (I know importers that do performance engines for sports cars, but I know of none that do diesels...

2.) How easy is it to get repair parts for these engines? I don't want to be down for a week waiting on parts to be shipped from overseas.

3.) Is there a way to connect a vacuum brake booster to this engine? A vacuum pump or otherwise?

And then one last concern that isn't so detrimental:

Has anyone bolted a York type compressor to this engine? York A/C compressors are popular for converting to be air compressors for on board air systems. Are there places where additional ancilary components can be bolted to this engine easily?

Bump.

This is now no longer a project in planning.

In attempting to get the gasoline engine past emissions for another two years, I started changing spark plugs. Plug hole in cylinder #1 is stripped. I am not buying a head, nor doing a head gasket. The engine's coming out.

C'mon guys... Any info would be appreciated, as I need an engine...

Was any particular year problematic? Any years Ideal? I know the gassers are supposed to have crank walk issues.

Will I need any sort of ECU or just plug in fuel lines and start it up? I'm probably leaning towards a mechanical injection type.

Try MS recyclers

I am also on a hunt for one I can afford. Most places want $2500

my old thread

possibly a newly discovered diesel option
