Need a Spot
The FSM calls first to discharge the AC and then remove the compressor to obtain access to the alternator. Does anyone know of a different path to obtain this access? Possibilities seem to include (1) removing the radiator, (2) removing the tie rod, (3) removing the fender shield. Input and suggestions from those who have done this would be much appreciated as my Raider is presently deadlined and I am scratching on what to do next. Thanks, Phil

I don't remember having to discharge the a/c. I think I got it loose (disconnect the battery - before removing the 10mm nut on the fat wire) and snaked it out the back and around the a/c. Had to move some wires and vac lines. At worst, you can unbolt the compressor and lay it aside and remove the a/c bracket, but I don't remember having to. Pulling the radiator should also give room.

Definitely don't discharge the AC. If you have to remove the compressor, just do as Eddy recommended - lay it to the side.

Hell, I changed an engine without discharging the AC.

I looked at Javy's when we were doing his head. It looks like there's plenty of room if you take the compressor loose (4 bolts, 1 wire) and lay it aside. The sway bar is in the way for a bottom drop. You could also take the fan out and go up the front. DON'T bang the radiator.

Given a choice, I'd go compressor removal.

drop the skid plate and snake it out the bottom. you will have to move some of the lower vac lines but thats it.

I didnt have to remove any of that. I dropped the AC belt then loosened the alternator and snaked it through the bottom. It is a very tight fit between the steering rod and front axel but it comes out.

when i did mine, I dropped the skid plate and went out the front. I had to remove a line from the radiator, but that was it. my lower fan shroud is already off and i have a 2in BL, so not sure if that made it easier or not. I think it is going to be a little pain no matter which way you go, so just go to it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
