alright. well i decided its time for a rear locker in my pickup to go with the front one.
is there any difference at all between a detroit EZ, and a powertrax lockrite? performance, drivetrain slop, noise, anything?
ive got a lockrite in the front, and ive had no problems with it, but im always open to suggestions. and the EZ locker is 30 bucks cheaper.

I installed an EZ locker in the front of my Dana 44. I was not at all happy with it. It kept locking and unlocking even while going down a straight road. My truck would pull left and right while the thing locked and unlocked, it was scary to drive in 4x4 mode. I pulled it out and sent it back. When I recieved another one it too did the same thing. It kept racheting and finally on one trail run it would not lock at all it would spin. I could hear it clicking really bad but it never locked up leaving me with a useless front end that would not work. I returned that one and just bought a Detorit Locker. Been VERY happy with it. I would get the Powertrax.

Not to steal the thread but, I too would like suggestions for a locker brand/type, I haven't narrowed anything down yet.
Next summer I would like to put in a locker(s) for my 87 4runner 5sp. I live in Denver so I see all kinds of weather; snow, ice, dry, wet, of course sand from the plow trucks. So I was curious on what would be a good set up for the back and for the front IFS that would complement each other nicly. The rear would see more weather conditions than the front, the front would be used for off road use more than on road. So thus I was thinking limited slip in rear and lock-right up front. But what kind of Limited slip, by who world work the best? Or any suggestions word be great.
Lets keep air/electric lockers out, too expensive for me.

The EZ-locker and Lock-Right are nearly identical. No difference worth mentioning- they are functionally identical. The Aussie and Quik-lock are also basically the same. The Aussie doesn't have any pins to break though, which sounds like a good idea.
Baldy- your EZ-locker simply wasn't set up right. Likely what happened is the distance between the couplers was greater than allowable spec, and that is kind of how it will act when that happens. You might have been missing a thrust washer or the carrier might have been worn. The instructions should have included those specs to check after installing it, and showed you how to test the locker. My Lock-Right did anyway.
I've been running a Lock-Right in my 44 for 5-6 years and its held up great. I broke the pins on it once beating on it really hard, but that was only a $10 fix. When they broke, all it did was lock up solid like a spool. Its not noticable in 2wd w/ the hubs locked and never acts strange in 4wd either, even in snow, etc. Very good bang for the buck! I've always meant to upgrade to an ARB when I had the money, but its hard to justify the extra cost when this one works fine.
I put an EZ-locker in the front of my brother in law's '87 IFS 4runner and he didn't have any problems with that one either before he sold the rig.

Lets keep air/electric lockers out, too expensive for me. The TrueTrac works quite nice: - http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/TrueTrac.shtmlOther option is the Supra clutch-type LSD: - http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/supra_lsd/

breaking a birf will take out a detroit for some reason. side shock? I have a power trax no slip in the front of mine and love it. no clicks, bangs. the detroit in the rear will lock and unlock at times and sounds like you broke an axle. mostly when taking off after stoping (while turning slightly) and taking off. only happens now and then and still startles me.

What is the difference between the power-trax and detroit true-track, detroit soft locker? Also, I have heard of other lockers like Aussie and Auburn Gear. Anything Else? What should I stay away from or look into?
Thanks, GOI
