Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've got an '84 carbureted 22R engine. The truck stalls when cold unless I give it gas. Once it's warmed up it's fine. I thought that the choke valve was supposed to take care of this. I checked it out and it's working fine. Probably about a 1/2" gap when the engine is cold, and when I depress the gas pedal, the choke valve closes all the way. I also set the idle speed to about 700-750RPM when the truck is warmed up.

Is there something that could be causing this or is it just an old carburetor?

There are two things that come to mind.

1st, and fairly common, the vacuum advance on the carb. I know when mine was shot it stopped fast idling when cold. Hook a vacuum gauge up to it and see if the diaphragms are blown (quite likely). Unfortunately a new one is about $100 bucks.

2nd, the fast idle screw may just need adjustment. It's below the warm idle screw, pointing downward at about a 35? angle. Tightening raises the cold idle, loosening lowers it.

Contrary to popular belief, while it is possible to adjust the chokes on these trucks, you really shouldn't. There is a specific way it's supposed to go on (a locking tab insures this from the factory), and your truck may protest if you tighten it.

I would read the choke section in my Carb FAQ to make sure the choke really is working right. It should only be about 1/8th inch open when closed.. 1/2" might make a difference when real cold.

Also read the idle screw adjustments to see if yours is out of whack.

I'd check that stuff and what stock87 mentioned and post back with the results.

I should add the cheapest place I've found for the vacuum advance is http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I started out by checking my choke. Scerb, ur FAQ is awesome!

I think that my choke isn't working right. I punched the gas pedal, and the choke opens exactly 1/4". Then I opened the throttle a little bit and closed the choke plate, then let go of the throttle, and then let go of the throttle plate. The throttle plate sticks completely shut until I punch the gas, then it opens to 1/4".

It feels like something is sticking. Where is the fast idle cam linkage, maybe that needs to be WD-40'd? It's also about 70 degrees where I live, that wouldn't make much of a difference should it?

Also, is there anywhere on the net where I can get a good tutorial on exactly how a carburetor works with illustrations and what not? It would really help if I knew exactly what was going on in there.

Need a Spot
I've been having this same problem for a while now. I took off the top of my carb and connected the linkage for the choke back up where the previous owner had taken it apart. My truck doesn't seem to want to kick into the fast idle. The choke seems to be working perfectly. It just doesn't pick up the fast idle. I can manual put it into the fast idle and it works great, but when I start the truck in the morning it doesn't want to engage the fast idle. I don't necessarily have the money to replace the Vacuum Advance, and I don't think this is even the problem here. The truck is a 87 22r. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I went and adjusted my timing to 5* BTDC and in the process of doing that they say you should disconnect the vacuum advance before setting the timing. When I reconnect the vacuum advance there is no difference in the timing. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to move almost 13* when the vacuum advance is connected, but I got nothin... Am I doomed to buy a new vacuum advance? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />$$

Chompy, see if the diaphragm holds a vacuum, if not, you need a new one.
