sye install questions

Hello all i tend to all my own work on my jeep, and need to put in Cv drive shaft and SYE on my 98 TJ. Thing is I sort of draw line when it comes to gears and transmissions. Being that you have to take the T-case apart i was wondering how hard it is to but the advance adapt, sye in, any one have any in site on this install Cheers ML

Hey Mudlover, DonÆt be sacred of a manual Trans and Transfer case Gears, they are no more complicated than an engine rebuild. There is not anything complicated to set up like the gears in a front or rear end. I havenÆt done a SYE yet, but I have rebuilt a few manual transmissions in my day, as long as you take your time and read the directions and pay attention when you take it apart, you will do fine with normal tools.

Thanks Bird, your advice results in lots of work heading to professional shops like mine! It also can result in DIYs learning and getting a good handle on how their rig works.
Here is the best advice...can you afford to have it towed into a shop in pieces if you get stuck? Can you afford a new t case if you mess up getting that little oil pump tube in correctly, it will toast it with no warning in 2-5 miles.
It is all in what you are willing to screw up in the learning process. If you need to drive it monday am, and you blew it, you are stewed.

SD Maybe I am just ahead of the curve, but I have never found a project I couldnÆt mechanic myself, if I took my time, read the directions, and carefully tackled the task at hand. I do know my limits though, when it comes to Machine work, fr or rear end gears, or Automagic transmissions I go to the pros, but I have build several engines and manual transmissions with no issues, a few were rather high horsepower too and used at the local circle track. I have had no formal training in mechanicing, I am a Mechanical Engineer, so maybe I approach things with a different perspective and carefulness, but I do not think my advice was poor or I said anything in accurate. Take your time, read the instructions, and make sure you know what you are getting into before you jump. Sean

You should be clear about that when you suggest jumping into a repair that if done wrong or poorly will cost the reader more than if they just brought it to a pro in the first place. If you bolt a valve cover down wrong, a leak is pretty much a worst case...If they Don't have the tools to get ring gear bolts torqued correctly they can wind up in the ditch or worse. Not to mention repairs of now broken housings and mangled gears and diffs. A sye is simple if you have been into one before or have knowledge of something not feeling right on a preload or torque enough to go back in and diagnose what went wrong.
If you can't afford to do it twice or more, the learning curve gets pretty steep.

Which is why I said, take you time READ the directions, and pay attention to what you are doing. If one reads the directions, myself included, and then goes, dang, I just donÆt have the skill or the right tools do this then absolutely go to the pros. I said right in my first post, I wont try a front or rear gear set up, I have seen it done a few times, and think I could, but it is such an art that I just donÆt want to try it because like you said, it is very costly if done wrong. But that still all comes back to paying attention to what one is doing, and knowing one's limits in both skill set and tool set. I know I get a lot more satisfaction from doing a job myself than taking my rigs to someone everything they need something, or I want to modify something, isnÆt that what this sport is all about, build it, find the next weak spot and fix it? Not pay someone else to do it? Part of the fun of wheeling, besides seeing some beautiful country, is to be able to repair what you drive.

Some can afford to tinker, some can't, some use their rig as a dd others do not. Some use wreckng yard partthat I would never consider and have no troubles. \ Some have a clue how to safely work on major drivetrain parts others should not. SD

SD, you sort of hit the nail on the head here, there are many things that can go wrong, when doing this install, all of which knew, I have done everything on the jeep but gears and trany work, I guess I will see how it goes when I open it up, cheers ML
