Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi, I've got a very stange problem with my Hilux 22 RE engine. Water is getting into the oil and oil is getting into the water at the same time. The new oil is all white and thick and the waterhoses show sign of oil on the inside. My guess was a crack in the engine-block or in the cylinder-head.
I started out with changing the engine block (a lot of work) but the problem wasn't solved. Then I baught another cylinder-head and changed it but the problem won't go away.
I'm getting tired and almost broke!
Almost the only thing that's left from the original engine ,were water and oil goes, is the timing-chain cover. But both the water and oil needs to be pressureized to reach oneanother and I don't see were the oil, in pressure, could possibly reach the water because the waterpump is rather far up were the oil just dropps back down along the timing-chain. Anybody heard of this problem before (on any engine).
I'd appreciate some help,
/Andreas- Sweden

This seems to be a common problem with the Timing chain cover. The chain can eat away at the cover, then punchures/grides a hole in the water line/pump area leading to your problem. Do a search and you'll find a lot of info. Look inside the timing chain cover for a chain width area where the chain would of grinded away at the cover. Might also replace the chain guides with metal ones. I'll even bet that you found broken plastic pieces on the bottom of the oil pan from the previous chain guide.

Need a Spot
I recently had the same problem. When I removed the T/C cover there were two grooves from the chain but no visible crack or hole. Sure enough water was getting in from there. Ordered my parts from EB and put it back together.problem solved. Good luck!

Yeah youre right about the pieces of plastic found in the oilpan.
In fact when I inspected another timing-chain cover that I got from my spare engine, the chain had eaten a bit on the sides. Unfortuneally I broke it when I reomved the cylinder head from that engine.
Thanks for answering!

We have a tech writeup in the Toyota section above for changing the timing chain; also look in our tech archive section for extra tips. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
