Google the towns you are going to be nearby and find a local club. If you get into a club you can get access to public and private land/trails and people who will help you get started.

The easiest way the get relatively accurate and complete information about easy-to-mild 4wheeling in the Southern California area is to search for string Backcountry Adventures Southern California on http://www.amazon.com. The book is not bad. It does not contain all trails, but it's good for a starter.

For LA, you're best bet for winter wheeling is Anza Borrego State Park and the surrounding area. They have good maps avaialble from the Ranger Stations and none of the trails are very difficult.
During the summer, you have three national forest around you: Angeles, Los Padres and San Bernardino. Again, get maps from the Ranger Stations.
Best bet is find other people to show you around. The book that holger suggestedis good. Finding a Club Local to you is also good. Check the Cal4wheel.com web site for Local Club listings.
I'm pretty busy till after the New Year but might be interested in doing a few trails at that time. PM me after the New Year, we'll see what's up.

For LA, you're best bet for winter wheeling is Anza Borrego State Park yes, Anza Borrego is the winter place: the best trails are closed from June 1 to September 30. Anza is an awesome place, unusually friendly to 4wheelers (for a CA state park). It offers an unusual 4wheeling experience (for a desert trail): Anza Pictures
