Getting the Wheeling Fever
Can i Swap a 86 axle out and put an 84 axle in its place with no problem's?
I have an extra housing laying around and my buddies 86 has a really bad pinion knock going on.
I believe the only difference is the width..would it affect anything...major
Any feedback is helpful...

It's not a plug-n-play; it's called a solid axle swap, or what's known as a SAS conversion.

THIS should give you some idea of what it entails.

Do it if he/you want to build the truck up later on. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

He means the rear axles... I have a 22RE/W56/RF1A now in the spec sheet here it says a V6, is the 86 4cyl axle different. What we are trying to get at is using a 84 4cyl axle on the 86 4 cyl truck ok, is ther any mods to be done... note this is all in the rear end not the front "SAS" THx 4 the help 55" vers 58"??? is that a problem?

If you mean the rear axle, everything will just swap over, the leaf perches are in the same place on both axles. You could however save yourselves some work and just swap the 3rd members.

True but when we towed the truck home it had a loud poping sound from the rear axle, my buddy said it might be a broke axle shaft or pinion slap?? find out more later thx for the info

Sorry---DOH--pinion!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Dropping the rear pumpkin should be first, so you guys can at least see what you're up against.
Should be okay for the axles; neither year had the V6.

i measured both housings and they are different in width but the perches are the same in distance.....shouldn't be much of a problem. We will disect the 86 rear end and maybe change out thirds if needed...but then agian the driverside tire was making an oval movement which might have something to to with the shaft...We'll find out when we start diggin...

With the narrower housing, the tires will rub the frame when it is flexed out. Sounds to me as if an axle broke along with the third member.

Lucky you made it home with out the bearing coming apart and the axle coming out. Power Tank Steve blew an axle in Old Sluice on the Con and made it about fifty feet before the bearing came apart. I blew a rear on 4-Dice at winch hill one and made it all the way out. It depends on where it breaks, SteveÆs broke at the bearing, and mine broke at the splines.

Your Emergence brake will be to long if you go with the 86 E-cable if the 84 rear axle didn't come with one.

Wouldn't a set of wheel spacers solve this issue?
not to worried about the e-brake cable..this will be a later issue...
